Overview The United States is the third largest country (in land area) in the world. The 48 contiguous states (sometimes called the Continental United States) are located in North America and bordered by Canada in the north, Mexico and the Gulf of Mexico in the South, the Pacific Ocean in the west and the Atlantic Ocean in the east. Alaska is located to the west of Canada, and Hawaii in the Pacific Ocean, south-west of California. The United States has numerous territories including: American Samoa, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico and United States Virgin Islands.
The highest point in the US is the summit of Mount McKinley in Alaska (elevation 20,320 feet), the lowest point is in Death Valley, California at 282 feet below sea level. The longest river is the Mississippi River (2,348 miles long). The largest freshwater lake is Lake Superior, one of the great lakes. The largest island is Hawaii.
The continental US is comprised of a vast central plain, and mountainous terrain in the west, with hills and low mountains in east. Alaska has tall mountain ranges interspersed with wide river valleys. Hawaii is a group of Islands formed by undersea volcanoes, the tallest of which (Mauna Loa) is approximately 56,000 feet in height from its base on the sea floor to its summit. Two of the largest mountain ranges in the continental US are the Rocky Mountains and the Appalachians.

================UNFINISHED BUSINESS================= Last week, I asked why Summary File 1 would answer the question, "How many Koreans live in Anchorage?" but not "How many Russians live in Anchorage?" The answer is that Summary File 1 contains race data and not ancestry data. As I explained back in Week 3, Korean is a subcategory of the "Asian" race category. Only the race categories of American Indian and Alaska Native; Asian; and Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander are subdivided. Hispanic origin is subdivided into Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban and Other Hispanic. As we know from Week 3, Hispanic is not a race, but an ethnic group. Descent from Russia, or from any other country or group I didn't name back in Week 3 is considered by the Census Bureau to be an ancestry group and not a race nor an ethnic group. Ancestry is a sample data question and the first time we'll see it reported will be in Summary File 3, due out June to September *2002* =============NEW BUSINESS: CENSUS GEOGRAPHY============== Last week, I asked you to look at the release schedule available at [http://www.census.gov/population/www/censusdata/c2kproducts.html]. If you haven't done so yet, please do it now. Pay close attention the column marked "Lowest Level Geography." Ask yourself two questions:

Art Wolfe Nature photographer, Art Wolfe, explains why small ship cruises to Alaska play a critical role in conservation, are better for the traveler, and more conducive to photography. Click for article Introduction Small-ship cruise programs give you the chance to view wildlife, primordial forests, massive cliffs, and the abundant nesting sites of bald eagles, all while enjoying the comforts of small cruise ships. (Top) Natural History For more information on the natural history of Alaska, see book selections below. (Top) History Scientists tell a different story. Some 30,000 to 40,000 years ago, in the Pleistocene period, low water levels in the Bering Sea revealed a land bridge connecting northeastern Asia to the North American continent. The 50-mile-long, 600-mile-wide spine of earth opened a passage for the nomadic peoples of the north to migrate south. Carbon dating on a caribou bone with a distinctive saw-toothed edge has revealed evidence of this from 27,000 years ago. To this day, Alaska maintains an irresistible, almost spellbinding, allure. Booms in fur, gold, salmon, and oil (1968 marked one of the biggest oil discoveries of all time at Prudhoe Bay on the Arctic coastal plain) crest and subside; each brings swells of entrepreneurs, adventurers, and explorers. They still come. Wildlife viewing, mountain climbing, bicycling, kayaking, hiking, fly fishing, camping, and nature-oriented tourism attract visitors year-round from the world over.

    United States
Introduction [Top of Page] Background: The United States became the world's first modern democracy after its break with Great Britain (1776) and the adoption of a constitution (1789). During the 19th century, many new states were added to the original 13 as the nation expanded across the North American continent and acquired a number of overseas possessions. The two major traumatic experiences in the nation's history were the Civil War (1861-65) and the Great Depression of the 1930s. Buoyed by victories in World Wars I and II and the end of the Cold War in 1991, the US remains the world's most powerful nation-state. The economy is marked by steady growth, low unemployment and inflation, and rapid advances in technology. Alaska in Maps
is a thematic atlas of Alaska. In contrast to a topographic-type of atlas that emphasizes contour lines and selected settlement features, a thematic map offers maps of special topics. Examples of thematic maps found in "Alaska in Maps" include earthquakes, volcanoes, Native language regions, and health care facilities.
" Alaska in Maps" was primarily designed for Alaska middle and high school students. However, it is also a useful atlas for anyone wanting to know about the geography of Alaska.
