Grammar training suggested for Lake Tahoe meeting PubSIG member LaRae Donnellan of Florida has suggested that we hold an advanced grammar training session at the ACE annual meeting in Lake Tahoe next summer. What a great idea! Thanks, LaRae! The grammar training offered in Asilomar, CA, a few years ago was outstanding - very helpful and loads of fun to boot. So we'll be looking into having one at our next conference too. *** If you have any other ideas for publishing workshops for the ACE conference, please send them in a reply to this e-mail. Thanks! 2004 Alaska Shooting Sports Workshop Cancelled
Due to a lack of registrations, the 2004 Alaska Shooting Sports Workshop scheduled to be held October 16-17, 2004 at the Birchwood Shooting Range in Chugiak has been cancelled.
2004 State Shoot
Shooting sports events are a functional part of the 4-H Shooting Sports Program. They are not the objective. Kids and youth development are the primary objectives of the program. We are seeking to educate young people and introduce them to some activities that are enjoyable, socially acceptable, mentally and physically challenging and useful in building character. Rules are part of every formal game. While we have tried to keep rules to a minimum, the nature of these sports results in abundant rules, some of them very specific. Fun and safety are primary products of the program. They are deeply intertwined with these rules, formalizing courtesy and maintaining order. The 2004 Alaska Shooting Sports State Shoot will again be in a postal format to allow for greater participation throughout the state. The general announcement may be

Frequently Asked Questions 1. What makes Alaska Grown products better than others I find at the grocery store or gardening retailer?
Living in Alaska, we rely heavily on purchasing our consumable goods from "Outside." That means that most of what we buy at the stores, including produce and bedding plants, have traveled literally thousands of miles to get into your hands, and are usually a week or more old. Alaska Grown produce, meat products and greenhouse bedding plants, on the other hand, are "fresher by far" because they are sold within a day or two of harvesting. In order to be labeled "Alaska Grown," the producer has made a commitment to providing only the very best of their products for sale. 2. Where can I pick my own Alaska Grown products?
There are a number of "pick your own" farms in Alaska. In Palmer, Pyrah's Pioneer U-Pick (907-745-4511) and Arctic Organics (907-746-1087) offer this service. Nugget Farms in Fairbanks (907-455-4721) and Art Carney's Farm in Wasilla (907-376-2077) also run U-Pick farms. It would be a good idea to call ahead to confirm availability of vegetables and to confirm hours of operation. 3. Why are Alaska Grown products more expensive?

59. PCA Alien Plant Working Group - Japanese Knotweed (Polygonum Cuspidatum)
Jil M. Swearingen, US National Park service, Washington, DC. PHOTOGRAPHS PM Iowa State Univ. Science Technol. Ames. coop. ext. Serv. 762, 2.
http://www.nps.gov/plants/alien/fact/pocu1.htm
Polygonum cuspidatum
Buckwheat family (Polygonaceae) NATIVE RANGE: Eastern Asia DESCRIPTION: Japanese knotweed is an upright, shrublike, herbaceous perennial that can grow to over 10 feet in height. As with all members of this family, the base of the stem above each joint is surrounded by a membranous sheath. Stems of Japanese knotweed are smooth, stout and swollen at joints where the leaf meets the stem. Although leaf size may vary, they are normally about 6 inches long by 3 to 4 inches wide, broadly oval to somewhat triangular and pointed at the tip. The minute greenish-white flowers occur in attractive, branched sprays in summer and are followed soon after by small winged fruits. Seeds are triangular, shiny, and very small, about 1/10 inch long. Japanese knotweed is designated a noxious weed in the State of Washington. ECOLOGICAL THREAT: Japanese knotweed spreads quickly to form dense thickets that exclude native vegetation and greatly alter natural ecosystems. It poses a significant threat to riparian areas, where it can survive severe floods and is able to rapidly colonize scoured shores and islands. Once established, populations are extremely persistent. DISTRIBUTION IN THE UNITED STATES: Current distribution of Japanese knotweed includes 36 states in the lower 48 from Maine to Wisconsin south to Louisiana, and scattered midwest and western states. It is not currently known to occur in Hawaii.
