Every decision that affects education is a political decision. How doesNEAalaska make its decisions about which candidates to recommend?
http://www.neaalaska.org/govern/politica.htm
Political Frequently Asked Questions
Why is NEA-Alaska involved in politics?
The legislative and political processes profoundly and fundamentally impact public education in Alaska. This impact runs the gamut from money decisions to the enforcement of student discipline policies and affects all public education stakeholders. Among the stakeholders particularly impacted are the men and women who work in the public school system. Their salaries, benefits, hours, and daily working conditions are directly related to decisions made by local, state, and national governmental bodies. Every decision that affects education is a political decision. Here are just a few examples:
  • School operating monies - determined by Congress and the Legislature, Certification requirements - established by Alaska statute and DOE regulations Curriculum, materials selection, and academic freedom - controlled by local school board policies Student discipline policies - established and ultimately enforced by local school boards Class size or PTR - established by local school boards

Because of the budget cuts, people in rural areas who want to attend board meetings will have to go to Anchorage, Fairbanks or Juneau. Two additional board members, representing the military community and students, have advisory votes. Alaska's public schools are organized within 54 school districts or Regional Educational Attendance Areas. A separate elected school board sits at the head of each district. Task Force
The state Legislature created four planning and advocacy boards that provide policy direction and guide budget decisions related to community-based care. The Alaska Mental Health Trust Authority and state general funds fund the boards. Composed of consumers, public and private providers, and interested members of the public, each planning and advocacy board is responsible for a statewide plan. Although Alaska does not have a specific Olmstead planning group, the state is carrying out Olmstead planning through the boards.
    The Plan
The planning boards collaborated to produce In-Step, Comprehensive Integrated Mental Health Plan , which was released in December 2001. This results-based plan offers a framework for decision makers to determine improvement to state services. Why is Commonwealth North doing this report?
For over ten thousand years people have made their homes in Alaska. Alaska's people are diverse in history and heritage and in their ways of living. This diversity is a great strength. But in recent years misunderstandings and conflicts have frayed the economic, political, and social fabric of our state. This is costly for all Alaskans. The purpose of Commonwealth North is to educate its members and all Alaskans on public policy issues and assist in their resolution. In 1999 the Board of Directors identified the division between urban and rural Alaska as an issue deserving detailed attention. From this grew the
