FAQs Who can attend school? Alaska state law guarantees a tuition-free education through twelfth grade to all children between the ages of 6 and 20. The law also requires children to attend school between the ages of 7 and 16, and may require attendance beginning at age 6 if a child has been enrolled in first grade at a public school for more than 60 days. Back to Top How are Alaska's schools governed? The seven-member sets education policy with the following mission: “to help ensure that young children arrive at their first day of school ready to learn and that all students succeed in their education and work, shape worthwhile and satisfying lives for themselves, exemplify the best values of society, and are effective in improving the character and quality of the world around them.” The Board also sets state academic content and performance standards; establishes minimum high school graduation requirements; approves annual lists of school construction and major maintenance projects and publicizes and puts into action regulations governing programs that operate under Title 14 of the Alaska Statutes, including public schools, early childhood and child care programs, and state libraries and museums. State Board members are appointed by the governor, and the Board appoints an advisor representing the military community, a student advisor, and a student advisor-elect.

About Us
Resources Publications Partners ... News STUDENTS ON SCHOOL BOARDS Students on School Boards of Education Resource Guide Last Updated March 200 INTRODUCTION- STUDENT participation on boards of education is a small part of a much larger movement towards meaningful student involvement throughout education. Since the 1960s the effort to promote student representation has waxed and waned, according to the will of school officials and the sincere interest of students involved. Today that tide is turning, and students across the US are calling for deepened engagement in the decision-making that affects them on all levels - in the classroom, in the auditorium, and in the boardroom. This guide can also serve students, educators, administrators, and concerned community members around the nation as they lobby for student participation on school boards of education. This is a multi-topic resource guide promoting Student Voice, Participation, Engagement, Involvement, and Representation on Local, District, Regional, and State Boards of Education. Includes research, examples, and other resources for students, educators, administrators, and concerned community members who support validating student voice in school decision-making by including students on local and state school boards of education.

About Us
Resources Publications Partners ... News STUDENTS AS EDUCATION DECISION-MAKERS Meaningful Student Involvement in Education Decision-Making By partnering with educators, students across the nation are making decisions about more than school dances and t-shirt designs. By applying their classroom learning and critical thinking, students make decisions about curricula, calendar year planning, and building design. They are joining boards of education at all levels, including local, district, and state boards. Education agencies engage students in their programs and engage students in grant making, school assessment, and planning. In a growing number of local schools, educators are allowing students to take a governing role in enforcing discipline policies, and using them to educate students. Students are also participating in establishing and enforcing codes of conduct, and making decisions about teacher and administrator hiring and firing. EXAMPLES Old School Practice/New School Thinking - In Anne Arundel County, Maryland students here have participated as voting members of the district board of education for more than 25 years. The student member is a high school senior who votes on all issues, including all areas of the school budget, discipline, and fiscal issues. In addition, every advisory, curriculum, and study committee, along with special task forces in the district includes students, working on everything from grading policies to alternative learning.
