Alternative Certification If you have considered teaching, but do not have certification to teach from a state department of education, The University of Alabama College of Education has a program that may be appropriate for you the alternative certification program. Through the alternative certification program, certain individuals who do not have teacher certification may earn a Master of Arts degree in education and simultaneously complete requirements for an Alabama Class A (master's-level) teaching certificate. If you decide that you do not want to pursue the graduate-level Alternative Certification Program, you may want to consider the College of Education's Irregular Post-Graduate (IPG) Program. Upon satisfactory completion of the program, however, you will not receive an additional undergraduate degree, but you will be eligible to be recommended for a Class B (baccalaureate-level) teaching certificate in your teaching field. The Alabama State Board of Education (ASBE), through an administrative rule (Chapter 290-3-3.04(3) (b)) adopted in 1997 and amended in 1999, requires all colleges and universities to use passage of the Alabama Basic Skills Test as a condition of admission to a teacher preparation program. Specifically, ASBE Chapter 290-3-3-.04(3)(b) reads as follows:
    (1) A formal written application for admission to professional studies.
    (2) Minimum grade point average (GPA) of at least 2.50 overall, in professional studies, and in the teaching field.
    (3) A passing score on the Alabama Basic Skills Test.

    http://www.stillman.edu/stillman/teacheredprog/teachedprogram.html
The Teacher Education Program is comprised of a set of prescribed field experiences, entry and retention requirements, courses, and regulations designed to prepare students for state certification and successful careers as teachers. The program includes preparation for students who wish to be elementary teachers as well as those who desire to teach a subject area at the secondary level. The program maintains the Teacher Education Center, a resource laboratory for students majoring in a teacher education area. Stillman College complies with requirements and rules issued by the Alabama State Department of Education for teacher certification. Published admission and curriculum requirements will be modified when necessary to reflect changes in state requirements. Retention in Teacher Education Once admitted to Teacher Education, students are required to meet program stipulations. Failure to maintain a minimum of 2.5 grade point average, on a 4.0 scale overall, in Professional Studies education courses and in the teaching field(s) places the student on probation and jeopardizes continuance in the Teacher Education Program. No grade lower that a "C" in any EDU, EED, or SED-prefix course is permitted; in case of a lower grade, the course must be repeated. In the opinion of the Screening and Admissions Committee, any student who fails to acquire the characteristics of a professional educator, develops academic problems or is deemed unsuitable for the profession may, after appropriate review, be dropped from the program.

Upon graduation, you will apply for your Alabama teaching certificate. This certificate is your "license" to teach in Alabama. Your certificate will be valid for five years and can be renewed with teaching experience and/or coursework. If you plan to teach in another state, you will need to apply for a teaching certificate in that state also. Each state has its own teacher certification requirements, application forms, and procedures. Though our program has reciprocity with other states, you may be required to take that state's certification exam and/or a national teacher's exam (PRAXIS). Because our programs are fully accredited (NCATE, ICP, SACS, NASDTEC, and State of Alabama approved), you should experience no major difficulty obtaining certification in other states.
