The Role of the PTA
(Page 1 of 2) The PTA is a powerful organization affiliated with many schools across the country. Read on for information about what the PTA does at school, and how you can join the club. By GreatSchools.net Staff If you picture the PTA as just a small crew of moms who meet now and then to plan bake sales, you may be in for a big surprise. The Parent Teacher Association, or PTA , is a huge and very influential nationwide organization with state and local affiliates throughout the country. The national PTA is headquartered in Chicago and promotes parent involvement in school communities. It is also a powerful lobbying organization in state legislatures and in Washington, D.C., advocating on behalf of students and schools. PTA vs. PTO

TEAM-Math + Parents = Improved Mathematics
Parent Briefing TEAM-Math is involving parents in the mathematics education of their children. On Nov. 15, 2004, TEAM-Math held a briefing for parent leaders, including representatives of PTAs/PTOs from the 12 TEAM-Math school districts. The more than 70 parents and school representatives in attendance learned about TEAM-Math and experienced for themselves this teaching approach as they created fractions using geoboards, which are bright yellow squares with an array of pegs. A video of fourth and fifth grade students solving the same problem further enlightened parents about the power of actively engaging students! tips for helping parents work with their children.
Dr. Marilyn Strutchens, project co-director, working with a parent at the briefing. Multicultural Literature An example of a typical session follows.
Parents and children doing mathematics together
at a Multi-cultural literature session. If the Rajah would have been able to complete the task, he would have needed enough rice to fill Mt Kilimanjaro. This story helps parents and children to see the power of mathematical thinking and exponential growth. Multi-link cubes are used to simulate the doubling of the rice during the reading of the story, so that the younger children can understand what is happening. Following the reading and discussion of the story, parents and their children are given additional problems to solve. All of the problems are related to finding patterns. Some of the questions are answered as a group to get the families started, and then families work the other problems on their own. As families work on the problems facilitators circulate among the families, monitoring their progress and providing hints as needed.

MC3 sought to identify specific areas within education that have potential long-term impact on children and families. Although Madison County's composite achievement score rates are above the national average, the drop out rate and the graduation rate need to be improved, showing that we have a large and identifiable group of children who are not being reached. PTA membership and literacy levels are indications of parental involvement which is key to children's success. Although we are above the state trend in both areas, again we can do much better. (Please note that some schools have PTOs rather than PTAs and these are not included in the statistics.) The National Survey of American Families (Urban Institute, www.urban.org) showed that in Alabama, "18% of all children ages 1 to 5 were read to or told stories fewer than three days a week," according to Linda Tilly, Executive Director of VOICES for Alabama's Children. "Children in low income families were almost twice as likely as other children to fall into this risk category. Child development specialists have long noted that reading books to children or telling stories triggers their imagination and sharpens their literacy skills."
