On the morning of 27 March 1814, General Andrew Jackson and an army of 3,300 men attacked Chief Menawa and 1,000 Upper Creek or Red Stick warriors fortified in the "horseshoe" bend of the Tallapoosa River. This was the final battle of the Creek War of 1813-14, which is considered part of the War of 1812. The victory here brought Andrew Jackson national attention and helped him to be elected the seventh President of the United States in 1828.

Guide to the Issues Environment download for printing National Monuments History of the Act With only a few hours left in his presidency, Roosevelt established Mount Olympus National Monument, now Olympic National Park, in 1909. In doing so, Roosevelt began a tradition of lame-duck monument establishment that has been followed by such presidents as Hoover and Johnson. Since Roosevelt first used the law, only three presidents Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan, and George Bush have not used the law. Jimmy Carter was perhaps the most prolific monument designator, creating 17 national monuments in Alaska covering 56 million acres in one day in 1978 after Congress failed to pass an Alaskan lands bill. Decades of Controversy Recent Debate With only three days left in his presidency, President Clinton designated seven new national monuments in five states. Interestingly, some of these lands are already in the public domain and already enjoy considerable protection from development. During his administration, President Clinton created 17 national monuments comprising more acres in the contiguous United States more than 4 million acres-than any president before him. Perry Lakes Park History
The ground breaking ceremony for the Perry Lakes Park was held on June 25, 2001. This event was attended by many State political leaders, representatives of the Department of Conservation, Marion and Perry County officials, numerous individuals from environmental organizations and scores of local citizens. The Park officially opened in May, 2002. Four students from Auburn's Rural Studio accepted part of the Perry Lakes Park restoration as their final project. Jennifer Bonner, Mary Beth Maness, Nathan Orrison, and Anthony Tindill designed and constructed this pavilion for the picnic area. Participating in the ribbon-cutting for the new pavilion are (L to R): Mary Ward Brown, author of "Tongues of Flame;" Bob Reed, Birmingham Audubon Society; Mary Beth Maness, studnet; Anthony Tindill, student; Nathan Orrison, student; Mayor Ed Daniel; Jennifer Bonner, student; Dr. Thomas Wilson, Judson College Biologist; Judge Cook; Donald Nicholds; Charles LeCroy; and Milford Smith, Alabama Power.
Franklin D. Roosevelt commissioned the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1935 to build bridges, lakes, and parks in order to provide employment during the "Great Depression." These workers used mules and wagons to create the Perry Lakes Park located five miles east of Marion, behind the U. S. Southeastern Fish Cultural Laboratory and near the Marion State Fish Hatchery on Perry County highway 175. Charles Wiant came from Pennsylvania to be the first Manager at the Marion Hatchery.

    Perry Lakes Ecology
History of Perry Lakes Park The Perry Lakes Park and Wildlife Sanctuary contains about 600 acres available to the public for outdoor recreation, education, scientific research, and other activities. Interpretive nature trails (fire lanes and primitive paths) make walking through the woods fairly easy and fun. There are four oxbow lakes making up a wild hardwood bottomland flood plain swamp environment. The lakes are surrounded by an old growth mixed hardwood bottomland forest that provides some of the best nature studies and birding in the State. John Swan, President of the Birmingham Audubon Society, led members on a birding tour of Perry Lakes Park. The group saw a Bald Eagle, Black-and-white Warbler, Yellow-throated Warbler, and other interesting birds. Dr. John Hall, Curator of the Black Belt Museum at West Alabama University, routinely brings students to the Park to learn natural history. John introduces a cooter turtle to his students. Fishing in the four oxbow lakes is best done from small aluminum boats or canoes. A concrete boat ramp has been build by the Department of Conservation to facilitate launching small boats on trailers. A picnic area with a pavilion is located beside the oxbow named Perry Lake.

January 22, 2001 The Honorable Don Siegelman Governor, State of Alabama State Capital Montgomery, AL 36130 Dear Governor Siegelman: As chairman of your Alabama Commission on Environmental Initiatives (the “Commission”), I am delighted to report that we have completed our work on the priority issues you charged us with on August 25, 2000, and will address the other issues set forth in your executive order in 2001. It has been an honor to chair this Commission that is so well represented by environmental experts from around our great state. Governor, your leadership in the selection of these individuals was both courageous and forward thinking. The Commission met extensively and debated numerous important issues both as a full body and as specific committees. Commission members traveled across the state to attend a series of twelve town meetings where we listened to thousands of citizens and numerous environmental experts. After hearing input from the citizens and with your priorities in mind, the Commission then began its deliberations and debate, which resulted in the 40 specific consensus recommendations we now present for your consideration. Additionally, numerous other recommendations and issues have been placed on the table for future debate and research by the Commission.

As part of our nation's Millennium commemoration of the year 2000, the United States Department of Transportation is working with the White House Millennium Council, the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy and other partners to “honor the past and imagine the future” by implementing a Millennium Trials Initiative. Millennium Trails is a national initiative to recognize, promote and support trails which preserve open spaces, interpret history and culture and enhance transportation, recreation and tourism. In honor of the millennium, the initiative will designate over 2000 trail projects in three categories, stimulating new activities to celebrate, enhance and develop those trails. The Alabama Millennium Trails Project is co-chaired by Alabama's First Lady Lori Allen Siegelman and Pete Conroy, Jacksonville State University's Director of Environmental Policy and Information Center.

If you are planning on making Alabama your new home state, get ready to spend a lot of time in the great outdoors. Mountains, lakes, plains and the seaside are all part of the natural beauty of the state. And with such a varied topography, conditions are great for just about any type of outdoor recreation.
If you come to Alabama, there's one place you're guaranteed to spend a lot of your time-the great outdoors. From parks and national forests to some of the best fishing spots in the nation, the Heart of Dixie offers a vast variety of outdoor recreations. The Alabama Nature Conservancy boasts the state is one of the foremost most ecologically diverse states in the country. Our plant and animal life is rich in diversity that rivals even California and Florida. A place far from the concrete jungles of the metropolis, Alabama has over 50,000 acres of unspoiled wilderness, from the rugged foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, to the snow-white beaches and sea breezes of the Gulf Coast.
The unique geography of Alabama makes it possible to spend a day in the mountains with the seaside just a few hours away. Outdoor sports are as diverse as the state's environment, with everything from camping, kayaking and rock climbing, to deep-sea fishing, hunting and boating.
