Glimpses of Alabama History
100 Things in Alabama for History Travelers
Prior to the arrival of European settlers, Alabama was populated by Cherokee, Creek, Choctaw, and Chickasaw Indians, which were known as the Civilized Tribes on account of their relatively advanced societies. De Soto was the first white man to explore the interior of present day Alabama. The first significant settlement was accomplished by French colonists, who arrived in 1702 and established a settlement in 1711 at what is now Mobile. The French lost their North American possessions to the British in 1763. The British in turn granted the region around Mobile back to Spain, which lost it to the United States in the War of 1812. Alabama was organized as a territory in 1817 and entered the Union as the 22nd state in 1819. Federal troops invaded the last remaining Indian territory in the northeast section of the state in 1838 and by 1840, the Indians had nearly all been driven west of the Mississippi. As a result of the election of Abraham Lincoln in 1860, Alabama seceded from the Union on January 11, 1861, and declared itself the Republic of Alabama. In February, a convention of delegates from other Southern states formed the Confederate States of America, with Montgomery as its capital. After its defeat by Union forces, Alabama was subjected to Reconstruction until 1873. In the years that followed, coal mining and steel manufacturing became the state's leading industries, with Birmingham as its center. During the Great Depression, the Tennessee Valley Authority developed dams that produced electricity and controlled flooding. Following World War II, one of the nation's primary missile development centers existed at Huntsville.

Save a personal copy of this article and quickly find it again with Furl.net. It's free! Save it. Presidential Places: A Guide to the Historic Sites of US. Presidents. By Gary Ferris. Winston-Salem, North Carolina, John F. Blair Publishers, 1999, 284 pages, $15.95. This guide to presidential sites should be an important contribution to the study of American presidents and a handy companion to the traveler with an interest in presidential history. Since presidential libraries were only begun with the modem presidents Herbert Hoover to the present it is not easy to find information in one book on earlier U.S. presidents, where they lived, and sites associated with their life. The National Parks Service has information on over 30 sites, but the rest are run by state agencies and organizations or non-profits. Therefore, information is not easily accessible for the scholar or tourist. Thus, it was with enthusiasm that I read this guidebook by Gary Ferris.

96. Interview With Dr. Ed Bridges From "Holding On To History: Alabama's Archive"
When this agency was created in 1901, it was the State s history museum, There is a separate historical commission for preserving historic sites,
http://www.alabamatv.org/archive/bridges.html
Interview with Dr. Ed Bridges,
Director of the Alabama Department of Archives and History
The following excerpts are from two interviews with producer Tom Rieland while in production of the documentary, Holding On To History: Alabama's Archive, an episode in The Alabama Experience series on Alabama Public Television. Tell us about the inception of the Alabama State Archives. Thomas Owen was a young University of Alabama graduate who married Marie Bankhead, the daughter of Will Bankhead. He got a patronage appointment in Washington DC in 1890s working at the Post Office. And while there he became interested in Alabama history, started working at the Library of Congress, was involved with the American Historical Association, realized that Alabama historical records were terribly neglected as he tried to use them for his own research and decided to try and come back and form a State Archives in Alabama. When Owen came back in the 1890s and started to work with the legislature to create an archive, a commission was setup and they ended up recommended the creation of a state archive. The law was passed, signed by the Governor in February 1901, and with that law, Alabama became the first state in the Union to form a state archival agency to take care of it's historical records and artifacts and serve as a museum for the state 33 years before the national archives were established, as a matter of fact. If you think about the late 1890s and early 1900s, it was a time of great sentiment for the Civil War. The veterans who had fought were by this time old men. Those who were in power tended to be young men who grew up in the shadow of the war. This was a time of high sentiment for those who fought for the Confederacy. So that was part of the effort to create the Archives, but I think there is also a recognition that and Owen stated this in one of his first letters, that "the state has an obligation to preserve the essential records of the people who contributed to building the state, it’s a moral obligation of the state to preserve that information, so the memory of their contribution is not lost."

September 15, 2003 Mrs. Bush's Remarks at Preserve America - The Museum of Mobile
Thank you, George (Ewert) for bringing history to life at the Museum of Mobile. Thank you, Senator Sessions, Congressman Bonner, and Mayor Dow for all you do for families in Mobile. I'm so glad to be back. Mobile is one of my favorite cities as you might have guessed. Last year, I was here to celebrate the opening of the West Regional Branch of the Mobile Public Library. I enjoy Mobile so much I brought some friends to visit. Thanks to our Secretary of the Interior, Gale Norton, for your service to our country. Thanks also to John Nau for your leadership as Chairman of the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation. And thanks to the residents of Mobile for making the Azalea City a great place to call home and to visit. Carl Carmer wrote, Mobile "rests apart, remembering the five flags that have flown over her. Spain and France and England and the Old South, grown harmonious through the mellowing of time, are echoes in the street. Mobile stays in the heart, the loveliest of cities." This loveliness can be found in azaleas at Bellingrath Gardens, or in the vibrant designs of quilts that have been passed down by generations of African Americans.
