About Archaeology...
Archaeology is the scientific study of past cultures and the way people lived based on the things they left behind.  Culture is the shared ways of life learned by a group of people, including their language, religion, technology, and values. Archaeologists study past cultures by examining artifacts , objects made, used, or changed by humans.  Have you ever found a penny on the ground?  That is an artifact that was lost by someone.  Years from now, that penny could be found by an archaeologist, and it would be studied as part of American culture in the early twenty-first century.  Excavations at Site 1Au397 near Prattville in Autauga County, Alabama.

Alabama's Ride to Freedom Tour Revisits Historic Sites of the Civil Rights Struggle
by Robert G. Miller Journalists’ Notebook January 13 – Birmingham A short plane ride from New Orleans to Birmingham allowed me to reflect on my upcoming journey and set my frame of mind for the trip. Within hours, we would walk through the 16th Street Baptist Church and see the courthouse where Bobby Frank Cherry was tried for murdering four little girls. Dozens of years of emotion surfaced as I anticipated passing through Birmingham's Civil Rights District. Once I arrived in Birmingham, nervousness turned to excitement at the hospitality shown by our hosts of many ethnicities. As Richard Arrington, the former mayor of Birmingham wrote, "We hope we can try to tell our own story. We want to help ourselves and others to understand what happened here, why it happened, and how we overcame the violence through nonviolence and changed the nation." After a reception at the historic Tutwiler Hotel with local dignitaries, accomplished jazz musicians and other inspirational African Americans, we anxiously awaited our historic ride to freedom through Birmingham, Selma, Montgomery and Tuskegee.

Professors do it in books and journals. Parents, teachers and ministers write history in the hearts and minds of the lives they touch. Carpenters write history in wood and engineers in steel. In January, I decided to write history through a journal as I experienced it. Thirty journalists from throughout the nation, including me, went to Alabama for a few days to learn about the civil rights struggle of the 50s and 60s, and see just how far we have come. Our bus ride called "Alabama's Ride to Freedom Tour," was sponsored by the Alabama Bureau of Tourism and Travel and Lewis Communications. The purpose was to raise visibility through the media for Alabama civil rights sites as tourist destinations. The bus tour took us to several historic cities. From walking hand in hand over the Edmund Pettus Bridge to meeting Rosa Parks' attorney, Fred Gray, this journey was simply awesome. Meeting the civil rights pioneers and experiencing their living history is something I will never forget. As Americans and especially African Americans, you will find a renewed appreciation for this saga of history and celebrate the freedoms we enjoy today.

HUMANITIES ENDOWMENT AWARDS $4.3 MILLION FOR 26 PROJECTS AT MUSEUMS AND HISTORICAL ORGANIZATIONS;
Eight earn recognition as We the People projects
WASHINGTON (October 6, 2004) The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) today announced that 26 U.S. museums and historical organizations will receive a total of $4.3 million in grants for consultation, planning, and implementation of interpretive permanent or traveling exhibitions or other public humanities projects. Eight of these have been designated as We the People projects, a special recognition by the NEH for model projects that advance the study, teaching, and understanding of American history and culture. "Long-term and traveling exhibitions and other public programs at museums and historical organizations offer Americans many opportunities for lifelong learning," said NEH Chairman Bruce Cole. "These projects bring audiences together with art objects, artifacts, and ideas that will deepen our understanding of history and culture." A complete list of new grants (5-page PDF) to museums and historical organizations is available.

    For over 20 years, archaeologists at the University of South Alabama have been excavating prehistoric and historic sites in the Mobile Bay area. Some of these sites are open to the public, but others are privately owned and access is restricted. You can " virtually visit " all of them through this website. Old Mobile capital of French Louisiane (1702-1711), has been undergoing excavation since 1989. The sites of eight buildings have been partially or completely excavated, with the recovery of thousands of artifacts. Bottle Creek , the largest Mississippian town site on the northern Gulf coast (A.D. 1100-1400), has eighteen earthen mounds that served as platforms for houses and temples. The Dauphin Island Shell Mounds , now a park and bird refuge, date from the Mississippian Period (A.D. 1100-1550.) They were visited for centuries by Indians who roasted oysters and fished in the Little Dauphin Island Sound. Port Dauphin , a French village on Dauphin Island and port for French Mobile (1702-ca. 1725), has been the scene of recent excavations that uncovered several houses and a barrel well. Archaeology at the Dog River site has uncovered a series of plantations dating from the 1720s to late 1840s. Originally the home of the Charles Rochon family, artifacts indicate that Indians and enslaved African Americans also occupied the excavated area.
