Mother's gift
honors soldier and helps FSU
By Carl Voelcker
Special to the Florida State Times
Mary Meginniss Harris had just one child, Joe, who graduated from the FSU criminology school in 1969 and joined the U.S. Army the next day.
In training at Fort Benning, Joe Harris - who had wanted to be a soldier since he was a Cub Scout in the 1950s - saved the life of a fellow officer in a gasoline explosion. As a helicopter pilot in Vietnam, he saved lives again, then lost his own.
Just before his helicopter was shot down, Joe talked to his mother briefly on the phone, expressing some apprehension about his mission, but reassuring her, "I think I'll be all right."
Now, 24 years after he died and five years after she retired from the same school where he had studied, Mary Harris has settled on his memorial: the Joseph Richard Harris Jr. Memorial Endowment for Excellence in FSU's School of Criminology and Criminal Justice.
In 1965, while Joe was away at military school, Mary Harris went to work at the criminology school, as its first full-time staff employee, and two years later Joe enrolled as a junior. She worked as dean's secretary, administrative coordinator, student advisor, and office manager until she retired in 1990.
Now she has given the school $600,000, to honor her son and create, with state matching money, a $1 million academic endowment.

Air Force officer disciplined for saying Bush allowed September 11 attacks
Hijacker attended US military school
By Jerry Isaacs 21 June 2002 Use this version to print Send this link by email Email the author Universally ignored by the press, however, was that the officer was not merely expressing a personal opinion. He was in a position to have direct knowledge of contacts between the US military and some of the hijackers in the period before the terrorist attacks that destroyed the World Trade Center and damaged the Pentagon. Lieutenant Colonel Butler, who wrote in a letter to the editor of the Monterey County Herald In his May 26 letter to the newspaper, Butler responded to Bush supporters, who had written the paper opposing the congressional investigation into the September 11 events. He wrote: The issue is a particularly sensitive one for the Pentagon and the Bush administration. While many people believe that the Bush administration viewed September 11 as a priceless opportunity to implement an ultra-reactionary program of militarism and repression, Butler is different. His military assignment brought him into contact with at least one of the alleged hijackers.

http://www.tarleton.edu/~kjones/gracie.html
The Commanders:
Archibald Gracie was born in New York on 1 December 1832 of a prominent Huguenot family. He was sent to Heidelberg, Germany, for his studies, and to the US Military Academy at West Point where he graduated (#14) in 1854. Following graduation, Gracie served for a time on the northwestern frontier but then resigned in 1856 to enter business with his father, now in Mobile, AL. After the war, Gracie's remains were moved to New York City. He was to have been promoted to Major-General soon. He was eulogized in a poem, "Gracie of Alabama" by Francis O. Ticknor. Young Marshall Moody was born at Chesterfield County, VA, on 23 June 1822. He migrated to Alabama in the early 1840s and worked as a school teacher, shopkeeper, and as clerk of the Marengo County Circuit Court. Moody joined the 11th Alabama Infantry as captain and became acquainted with Major Archibald Gracie, with whom he was associated for the rest of the war. Moody helped Gracie raise the 43rd Alabama, and when Gracie was promoted to Brig Gen'l, Moody became Col. of the regiment (4 November 1862). Moody also fought in East Tennessee, with Braxton Bragg's Kentucky Campaign, at Chickamauga, the siege of Chattanooga, the siege of Knoxville, and at Bean's Station. When Gracie was wounded, Moody took command of the brigade and oversaw the unit's transfer to Gen'l P. G. T. Beauregard's command in Virginia, along the James River near Petersburg. There he was wounded (Drewry's Bluff, 12 May 1864). Upon his return to duty, Moody and Gracie served in the trenches of Petersburg. When Gracie was killed in action, Moody again took command of the brigade. He was not promoted to brigadier until 4 March 1865 just in time to surrender with the Army of Northern Virginia in April.

He also edited the Bartow Courier-Informant (1905-1915) and served on the Bartow Board of Education from 1912 until his death. The University of South Alabama Office of Development has undergone a reorganization, positioning it for future growth.
Vice President of Development and Alumni Relations Dr. Joseph Busta said the new division between campus and medical affairs development will help both sides of the University flourish through better staffing and more attention to the individual needs of the colleges, schools and hospitals.
Busta said he is proud of his development staff and their experience.
“With these professionals in place, joined by existing staff, we should be able to move our development programs significantly forward in the near future for the benefit of our students, faculty and physicians,” he said.
Jim Rainey was selected earlier this year to be the director of development for medical affairs at USA. In this position, Rainey is responsible for fundraising for the College of Medicine, Knollwood Hospital, the USA Medical Center, and USA’s newest medical initiative, the Cancer Research Institute.
Previously he served as executive director of the Outdoor Writers Association of America and the Federation of Fly Fishers. He also was a major gifts officer for the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York.

I.) was established in Marietta, Georgia in 1851 and was the state's first military school. The campus, located on 110 acres of rolling hills about a mile from the square of Marietta on the road to Powder Springs, included a main school building, four dormitories and the house quarters for the Superintendent. In 1852, G. M. I. received 120 cadet muskets, 18 small swords and a battery of four six-pounder guns with the seal of the state of Georgia and the inscription "Georgia Military Institute" on the barrels. In 1858, the Armory building was added, along with two cannons and an appropriation of gun powder. Cadets guarded the Armory 24 hours a day. G. M. I. opened on July 1, 1851 with three instructors and seven cadets and quickly grew to almost 200 cadets. In 1852 it was incorporated and officially founded when the state legislature granted a charter that provided for regulation of the school and a state appointed Board of Visitors. By 1853, six faculty members and 180 cadets filled the campus near capacity. The student body fluxuated between 150- 200 cadets up to the outbreak of the War Between the States.
