Information Request History of Missouri Military Academy Missouri Military Academy 1903 era For more than a century, Missouri Military Academy has been leading the way to success for young men from across the United States and around the world. The Academy was founded in November 1889 when the citizens of Mexico, Missouri donated funds and 20 acres of land for the purpose of establishing a military school. The task of building MMA fell to Col. A.F. Fleet, a US Civil War veteran, who erected the campus' first buildings southwest of the city. When fire destroyed the school's original site in the fall of 1896, Col. Fleet removed the cadets to Culver Military Academy (now the Culver Academies). In 1900, the Businessmen's Association of Mexico and Col. A.K. Yancey of the Alabama Military Institute rebuilt MMA. The City of Mexico assisted the project with a contribution of $10,000, which was used to purchase the grounds on which the modern Academy is located. On Sept. 20 of that year, the doors of the Academy opened once more. Upon Col. Yancey's death in 1901, his business partner, Col. William D. Fonville, assumed the office of superintendent and oversaw the construction of additional barracks. After his retirement in 1911, Col. Fonville was succeeded by Col. W.R. Kohr and, three years later in 1914, by Col. E.Y. Burton.

The West Point Tuba Quartet is one of several chamber ensembles comprising members of the United States Military Academy Band at West Point, New York. The quartet was formed in April of 1988 with the purpose of expanding public awareness of the solo capacity and flexibility of low brass instruments, and performing the ever-expanding repertoire of tuba ensemble music. With music ranging from Renaissance madrigals to ragtime tunes, from marches to original tuba compositions, the quartet has entertained and delighted audiences with the lush, harmonious sounds emanating from these instruments. The Woodstock Times called the group, "An ensemble... virtuosic in line and tone." The quartet has performed at such prestigious events as the U.S. Army Band's Tuba-Euphonium Conference at Ft. Meyer, Virginia in 1989 and 1994 and at the Eastern National T.U.B.A. Conference in Washington, DC in 1989. Each musician of the quartet had a rich and varied background of performance and academic experience prior to his selection, through personal audition, for duty with the famed U.S. Military Academy Band. Each member of the ensemble serves as active-duty Army bandsman with the Military Academy Concert and Marching Bands.

You will train on the mock door, the 34 foot tower, and the lateral drift apparatus (LDA). To go forward to Tower Training Week, you must individually qualify on the 34 foot tower, the LDA, and pass all physical training (PT) requirements. The Mock Door The 34-foot Tower The Lateral Drift Apparatus TOWER WEEK
The individual skills learned during Ground Week are refined during Tower Week and team effort or "mass exit" concept is added to the training. The apparatuses used this week are the 34-foot towers, the swing landing trainer (SLT), the mock door for mass exit training, the suspended harness, and the 250-foot free tower. Tower Week completes your individual skill training and builds team effort skills. Darby sees potential, but no challenges among Tide's freshman backs
By GREG WALLACE
BIRMINGHAM POST-HERALD
TUSCALOOSA — Kenneth Darby smiled the all-knowing grin of a true veteran.
It was mid-July, and the University of Alabama junior tailback sat amidst a circle of reporters, talking about his progress from sports hernia surgery, when the subject of Alabama's talented incoming freshman backs came up. Did he worry about challenges from Roy Upchurch, Glen Coffee or Ali Sharrief during his summer-long rehab? No. Christine Prichard/Post-Herald
Kenneth Darby celebrates a secon-half touchdown with teammates during the Tide's victory over Southern Miss in October 2004. "Them young guys, they kind of remind me of myself," Darby said, a slight chuckle in his voice. "They're young, hotheaded, and they think they're going to come in and do this and that. But they don't know it's totally different from high school. "That's the same attitude I had coming out of high school. I thought I was going to come in and run the show — until I found out what college was really like." Today, "those young guys" start getting a sense of just how hard — or easy — their journeys toward Crimson Tide stardom will be.

Save a personal copy of this article and quickly find it again with Furl.net. It's free! Save it. By Rod Andrew Jr. Chapel Hill: University of North Carolina Press, 2001. viii, 169 pp. $29.95. ISBN 0-8078-2610-3. Military virtue equates to civic virtue, and, by definition, good soldiers make good citizens. According to Rod Andrew Jr., "this idea preceded the existence of the Confederacy, drew sustenance from the Lost Cause, and persists today" (p. 62). In his examination of the southern military school tradition, Andrew seeks to reinterpret previous arguments by John Hope Franklin, Marcus Cunliffe, Don Higginbotham, and others. Viewing military traditions within their cultural and political contexts, he notes that the southern version of militarism encompasses honor, patriotism, civic duty, sacrifice, and piety. Moreover, military discipline inculcates positive character traits-bearing, courage, loyalty, and moral behavior. According to Andrew, professional officer training did not constitute the primary purpose of southern military schools. Rather, the South's military tradition found expression through southern culture, educational beliefs, and political ideology.
