Lesson 2: Geography Determines History
2. Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of this lesson, students should be able to: Describe the geographic location of the Creek War.
Name the rivers where the battles took place.
Analyze the importance of geographic features in planning battles.
Describe the importance of mapping roads through the wilderness.
Analyze the importance of maps in planning military strategy.
Debate the relevance of the statement: Geography determines history. 2. Suggested Activity for Entire lesson Make a copy of Documents and for each student.
Ask the students to arrange the maps in chronological order. They may use their textbooks or other references to help with this.
After students complete these tasks, organize the class into four groups. Assign one map to each group. Ask each group to use the general guidelines for analyzing a map and compile their observations and report their conclusions to the class. 2. Suggested Activity for Document 1: Note that the orientation of the map is unusual - the title and names of sites, printed sideways, distort the traditional north-south orientation. You may need to bring this to the attention of younger children; older students should discover this in their analysis.
Use this map to locate forts, battles, towns, etc., mentioned in other documents relating to the Creek War.

Alabama. American FactFinder (U.S. Census) Alabama, "The Heart of Dixie"
Abbreviation:
AL The etymology of the word or name, Alabama, has evoked much discussion. It was the name of an Indian tribe (Alabama, Albama, Alebamon, Alibama, Alibamou, Alibamon, Alabamu, and Allibamou). Alabama possibly means "Here We Rest", but it could also mean "thicket clearers", Alabama being a compound of Alba meaning "a thick or mass vegetation," and amo meaning "to clear, to collect, to gather up." Alabama became the 22nd state in 1819. From the early 19th century, Alabama's economy was dominated by cotton. However, although it is still an important crop, such as corn, peanuts, soybeans have taken over much of the former cotton lands. Particularly in the second half of the 20th century, a comparatively rapid industrialization set in. The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) program of hydroelectric power production, begun in the 1930s, fostered the growth of giant fertilizer, munitions, and aluminum industries. Alabama, known as "Heart of Dixie" occupies a central place in the history of the South. Montgomery, the Alabama capital, served as the first Confederate Capital during the Civil War. Tourists can visit Alabama's historic homes and gardens, reminiscent of the Old South. Also popular are the resorts and beaches on Dauphin Island, the Gulf Shore and Mobile Bay.

About this site Alabama Maps is an ongoing project of the Cartographic Research Laboratory, which operates under the auspices of the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Alabama. This web site is divided into two sections: the Contemporary Map Index and the Historical Map Archive.
Contemporary Map Index
The Cartographic Research Laboratory has been creating computer generated maps since the early 1990's. Rather than maintaining these maps in digital archives, we felt that it would be more useful to us and to the public if we made these maps freely available on the Internet. We believe that the maps will be particularly valuable to educators and the business community while, at the same time, allowing us a means of communicating our services to potential clients. The maps available on this site may be used free of charge by anyone for any purpose. Our only caveats are that we be cited as the map's source and that the map not be modified in any way. Also, we would appreciate being notified if our maps are used in a publication, just for our own edification! Historical Map Archive
The Historical Map Archive is a digitized collection of selected map holdings from the University of Alabama Map Library , the W. S. Hoole Special Collections Library

Alabama - A State Unit Study This mini unit on ALABAMA uses the cross curricular approach to education. There are several activities from different academic subjects for you to choose from. One of the most important things is to have fun! Below are some activities to help you study ALABAMA. You may choose to do all, some, or none of the activities. You can also alter the activities to better suit your individual child's needs. Some of these activities overlap each other, choose the one you think that you and the children will enjoy most. The main point of this unit is to make learning about ALABAMA and enjoyable for all who are participating. Alabama's State Flag A crimson St. Andrew's cross on a white field, patterned after the Confederate Battle Flag, and adopted in 1895. The bars forming the cross must not be less than six inches broad and must extend diagonally across the flag from side to side. Flag adopted 1895. Create a State "Infodesk": Before you begin this unit you may want to set up a research area. Place a desk or table in front of a bulletin board area. This will be where you can place relevant books, magazines, photographs, posters, newspaper articles, maps, scrapbooks, games, puzzles, computer software, task cards, travel brochures, etc. that you collect. Print a blank map of the state, or draw one on tag board, that you can place on the bulletin board. As you study the political and physical features of the state, have the children fill in the name of the state capital, large cities, and major geographical features. Color the map using different shades for varying elevations.
