: This website is authored by David Rayner, Head of Geography at Rainham Mark Grammar School in Kent. The website started as a school resource and has now grown to include over 1000 carefully categorised links for Keystage 3, G.C.S.E. and 'AS/A2' Level. There is also a special page for teachers with links to exam boards, publishers, etc. Other sections in GeoResources provide weather data and outline maps to include in homeworks or projects, detailed case studies e.g. Kobe earthquake, UK National Parks and oil spills, Virtual Fieldwork (so that can you can visit sites and stay dry!), a photo gallery and a weekly GeoQuiz. Pupilvision is a 600 page website full of resources for pupils and teachers of geography. Built by Keith Phipps who is Head of geography and Head of Year at King Edward VI Camp Hill school for Boys in Birmingham, the site was originally built to support his pupils. Over the two years of development the site has become a major resource. It was given a Royal Geographical Association Award in December 2000. Keith Phipps uses the site in all his lessons and the integration of Internet into his teaching has led to him winning the national award of 'Teacher of the Year' for the most creative use of ICT.

    • "Alabama Maps is an ongoing project of the Cartographic Research Laboratory, which operates under the auspices of the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Alabama. The Cartographic Research Laboratory has been creating computer generated maps since the early 1990's. Rather than maintaining these maps in digital archives, we felt that it would be more useful to us and to the public if we made these maps freely available on the Internet. We believe that the maps will be particularly valuable to educators and the business community while, at the same time, allowing us a means of communicating our services to potential clients. The maps available on this site may be used free of charge by anyone for any purpose. Our only caveats are that we be cited as the map's source and that the map not be modified in any way. "

The site contains maps of Jerusalem, and basic information concerning the map-makers and the history of cartography in Jerusalem."

Making and Using Clickable Web-Based Maps for Geography Education: It's Easy
    Dr. Miriam Helen Hill

    Paper presented
at the annual meeting of the National Council for Geographic Education, November 4, 1999 in Boston, Massachusetts. Dr. M. H. Hill was a Visiting Assistant Professor in the Department of Geology and Geography at Auburn University in Auburn University, Alabama. She is now an Associate Professor in the Department of Physical and Earth Sciences at Jacksonville State University in Jacksonville, Alabama. Abstract: Clickable maps identify a page area and link another frame. Clicking the area provides additional information about that area. Instructions and classroom applications are discussed.
Maps and graphics are an integral part of geography and geography education. Geography is a very strongly visually based discipline. Often, we place a map before our students and attempt to draw their attention to something we see on that map; however, just as what we say may not register, what we see may not be where their attention is directed. Individualizing instruction is an attempt to draw the student into the learning process, making them active learners involved in hands-on ways. Collaborative learning may extend this direct involvement to small groups. Computer technology can facilitate both approaches by serving as a media for graphic presentation. Computer screens can readily display a variety of graphic images, photographs, diagrams, maps, and text, as well as animations, videos, and audio clips. Together, these can tell the story of spaces and places in ways unavailable to educators in decades past.

Wow, what a topic. There are maps of Virginia from 500 years ago, and maps just produced today for new "enhanced 911" programs. (It's hard to dispatch a fire truck or ambulance to an address like PO Box 1234, so most Virginia counties are creating new addresses for houses on rural mail routes and providing maps to emergency personnel...)

(First posted on 05/25/05) Clue #1 Standing here it's somewhat hard to image that this stunning place was once an unappreciated and undeveloped tract of land. Clue #2 Its incredible modern success can in some ways be attributed to a flashy, way-ahead-of-its-time entertainment concept. Clue #3 And like another one-time ( all the rage ) television show (Dallas) , this destination's namesake program also brought international fame and a substantial influx of valuable tourists and related revenues.
