Universal Borrowing Frequently Asked Questions About Universal Borrowing
(ALabama LIbraries Exchange Service) What is Universal Borrowing?
Universal Borrowing (ALLIES) is a cooperative service that allows students to borrow books directly from another ALLIES partner library. AUM students and employees will be able to walk into a participating library and check out materials using a photo ID. Materials can be returned to any library in the ALLIES system. In addition, AUM student and employee users will be able to request books from these libraries and have them delivered quickly to any library in the ALLIES system through the library catalog. What libraries are Universal Borrowing (ALLIES) participants? The participants in universal borrowing operate under the heading of ALLIES, which stands for “Alabama Libraries Exchange Service.” The libraries participating in universal borrowing include:
    * Auburn University
    * Auburn University at Montgomery
    * Jacksonville State University
    * University of Alabama
    * University of Alabama at Birmingham (Sterne Library)

    QUARTERLY REPORT
    NOVEMBER 1, 2002 - JANUARY 31, 2003 Highlights Four staff members assisted NLM in testing the new DOCLINE interface. We started planning for our February Regional Advisory Council and Resource Library Director meeting, NLM site visit and year 03 budget submission. We unveiled the new SEA Currents design with the first issue of 2003 and completed the web archiving project. We funded 10 new outreach projects this quarter, provided 15 training sessions and exhibited at 7 meetings throughout the Region.
  • Network Programs Resource Sharing: ILL and DOCLINE/SERHOLD/DOCUSER Ms. Wescott promoted EFTS information to resource libraries in the region. Most are ready to join after the first of the year and after a bit more time on ILLiad. Ms. Wescott and Ms. Becker participated in an evaluation of the new DOCUSER interface in December and Ms. Peyton and Ms. Yancey in January.
