Included are the institution’s anchor library, the Amelia Gayle Gorgas, as well as the Angelo Bruno business library, the McLure education library, and the Eric and Sarah Rodgers library for science and engineering. Each library system ensures compliance with its own policies and collects any fines owed, Cunetto added. For more information about the University of Alabama library system, see

STUDYING THE HISTORY of agriculture and rural life in Alabama can provide important insights into the development of the state. As part of the United States Agricultural Information Network (USAIN) Preservation Project, Auburn University Libraries recently completed a project that supports scholarship in this area by preserving on microfilm a significant body of literature relating to agriculture and rural life in Alabama. Because the state's population was largely rural until the mid-twentieth century, these publications constitute a rich source of information now available to scholars studying Alabama history. In identifying materials for inclusion in this project, the Auburn project managers defined and interpreted the terms agriculture and rural life somewhat broadly because of the nature of life in Alabama during the years 1820-1945, when the state was almost entirely rural and agriculture provided a livelihood for most of its citizens. Until 1945, when many Alabamians moved into metropolitan areas and the percentage of people engaged in agricultural production declined, almost every facet of life was directly related to or was closely intertwined with agricultural production and rural life. This broad definition of project parameters has allowed the USAIN project to preserve for scholars a substantial body of significant sources on Alabama history.

Alabama Libraries Launch New Digital Library Service
Jun 13, 2005 By News Staff Alabama libraries are giving residents unprecedented access to popular audio books directly from their homes and offices via a new online service called Camellia Net . OverDrive Inc., a vendor of downloadable audio books for libraries, supplied the technology for the new service. Camellia Net is a collaborative effort between the Cullman County Public Library System, the Thomas B. Norton Public Library in Gulf Shores, and the Orange Beach Public Library.
Camellia Net's downloadable Audiobook collection includes bestsellers and classics, fiction and non-fiction, from popular authors and leading publishers such as HarperCollins, McGraw-Hill, Zondervan, and John Wiley and Sons. Patrons download free reader software and then use their Cullman County, Thomas B. Norton, or Orange Beach Public Library cards to check out and download audio books.
"This is another exciting opportunity for our libraries to provide cutting-edge library services to our patrons," said Bonnie Lee, Director of the Orange Beach Public Library.

Phone: 206.709.3206 REDMOND, Wash. Alabama is on its way to offering computer and Internet access at every public library in the state, as the result of being the first statewide partner of the Gates Library Foundation.
In recognition of Alabama library leadership, the Foundation today announced it will host an event to applaud the hard work of the libraries and announce the next round of state and local grants, all aimed at giving computer access to public library patrons in the lowest income communities in the country.
Nearly every library in Alabama—over 250 altogether—have received a total of over $2.7 million in grants for new computer hardware.
Individual grants have ranged from a modest $80 request by the Oscar Johnson Memorial Library to purchase a memory upgrade for its existing workstation, to over $280,000 to the Birmingham Public Library to build new computer centers at each of its 20 branch libraries.
In addition, each library is receiving technical assistance and training from the Technology Resource Institute (TRI), a Seattle non-profit organization funded by the Foundation to act as its on-site and over-the-phone technical support arm. Microsoft Corporation has donated software for each grant recipient as well.

Murray, University of South Alabama Biomedical Library As technology allows, it has become necessary to modernize traditional library resource sharing mechanisms, and to experiment with new technologies to improve services. While the information explosion continues, libraries’ buying power for journals and collection development is declining. Libraries have turned to resource sharing networks to meet their patrons’ information needs. This creates a time lag between the time an article is requested and the delivery of the article; often including multiple visits to a physical library building. Coincidentally and independently, the University of South Alabama Libraries, consisting of the University Library and the Biomedical Library, researched new document delivery methods during the same period of time. I wanted to share their experience with you and show you some screen shots of how Prospero is implemented and used.
