Search Focused Industry Training Gov. Bob Riley was joined by workforce development officials and a representative from Mercedes-Benz's Tuscaloosa County plant today to announce a new initiative that helps train adults for existing jobs that become vacant when workers leave them for employment at Alabama's growing automotive industry. The new Focused Industry Training (FIT) program will provide training and job placement services at 34 sites across the state, concentrated in areas around Alabama's automotive manufacturing plants. "We are seeing a gap in the number of skilled workers available for existing industries when their employees leave for jobs in the auto industry," Gov. Riley said. "This new effort will increase the pool of skilled workers who can take these newly vacant jobs, boost their careers and sustain Alabama's economic growth." The job training will be conducted by personnel from 13 of Alabama 's two-year community and technical colleges. The FIT sites are concentrated in the Northeast Corridor around Lincoln, home of the Honda Manufacturing of Alabama plant; in West Alabama around the Mercedes-Benz USI plant; and, along the Interstate 65 corridor north and south of Montgomery, home to Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama's soon-to-be completed plant.

Alabama's economy has been growing by leaps and bounds, not just by relocations into the state, but also by expansions from Alabama industries. By Donna Clapp
The best economic development is when we grow from within, and I'm extremely proud that in 2003 we had more than 9,300 new jobs created when industries already in Alabama expanded their operations," says Governor Bob Riley. "In a break with recent history, the new jobs that are being created do not come from mostly one industry or in a few areas of the state. Instead, we are now seeing new jobs in virtually every sector of our economy and every corner of Alabama. From telecommunications and aerospace, to plastics and agribusiness, Alabama companies are growing and adding workers to their payrolls." Indeed, in recent years Alabama has proven itself to be a prime location for new and expanding businesses. More than 5,200 manufacturing and distribution companies employ 312,300 Alabamians and export over $8.3 billion worth of goods and services. It is a state with a low overall tax structure, streamlined regulatory environmental permitting procedures, and favorable tax and business development incentives.

Alabama Premises Registration System Commissioner of Agriculture, Ron Sparks, announced that in response to the January 11 positive result for BSE in Canada (the second in that country in two weeks), the Alabama Department of Agriculture and Industries has accelerated the Premises ID Registration program. "I want to reassure the farmers and consumers of Alabama that the Department of Agriculture and Industries is taking steps to be proactive to protect animal and human health," stated Sparks. While announcing the development of the Alabama Premises Registration System, Sparks noted that livestock producers from all areas of the Alabama livestock and poultry industry can now sign up for a unique “premises identification number” for their particular livestock facility. “This is the first step in implementing a national system for quickly tracing livestock and poultry for disease investigations or during a disease outbreak or animal health emergency”, Sparks said. The long-term goal of the Alabama Department of Agriculture and Industries (ADAI) in cooperation with the USDA and the livestock industry is to establish a system that can identify within 48 hours all premises and domestic disease of concern. “This is a monumental but reachable goal. We must develop a practical yet comprehensive program that keeps up with animal movement and a premises registration system is vital to this effort,” Sparks continued.

Other leading industries were chemical manufacturers, including those making chemicals for agriculture and other industries, organic fibers, and paints; primary metal manufacturers, including iron foundries, blast furnaces, and steel mills; firms making aluminum sheets and plates, and copper rolling mills; and textile mills, making woven cloths and yarns. Industries also employing a large number of Alabama residents are meatpackers; manufacturers of men’s and boys’ apparel; makers of vehicle tires; producers of motor vehicle parts; and lumber mills.
