February, 1994 Extension Service Promoted Women's Home Industry Through Craft Activity by Erin Kellen Are there any readers, particularly those who lived in Alabama between the two World Wars, familiar with organizations such as the Clay County Basketmakers Association, the Bullock County Home Industry Association and the Simmsville Long Leaf Pine Needle Basket Club? Others may remember visiting the Home Industries department at Loveman, Joseph and Loeb, a department store in downtown Birmingham. These enterprises developed out of United States Home Extension Service activities in Alabama. Congress passed the Smith-Lever Act in 1914, establishing the Cooperative Extension Service, whereby county agents would call on farm communities to teach farmers the latest agricultural technology and, as well, to teach home economics to women and girls. Home Extension Agents made quite an impact on the often isolated communities they served, many of which were without electrical service, telephones, or even rural mail delivery. In the South, the boll weevil and generations of agricultural practices that left much of the land eroded and unfertile had taken their toll. The Extension Service was a means by which the federal government hoped to transmit information that would help rural people upgrade their lives.

  • Growers in Alabama produce an average of 735 thousand bales of cotton on approximately 560 thousand acres.
    • The latest Census of Agriculture reports that 1,320 farms planted cotton with average cotton acreage on those farms of approximately 400 acres. The annual farm-gate value is estimated at roughly $190 million.
  • Why is DR-CAFTA Important to the Cotton Industry of Alabama?
    • The absence of a DR-CAFTA agreement puts at risk a market that imports a substantial amount of U.S. cotton.
      • DR-CAFTA countries have been a growth market for U.S. cotton due to benefits conveyed under the Caribbean Basin Trade Partnership Act (CBTPA). Since 2000, U.S. cotton and cotton product exports have grown from 1.9 million bales to the current level of 2.7 million bales.
A Western Hemisphere trading platform provides the US cotton and textile industries with the best means of competing with textile products sourced from Asia, primarily China.

Automotive Industry Provides Jobs for Alabama
By Joanne Eskreis Published: Thursday, July 15, 2004 The automotive industry in the area has been increased with the opening of new plants in Alabama that have provided a large number of jobs for Alabamians. A survey was conducted to see how our state has grown due to the large number of new automotive plants opening.
This survey of the automotive manufacturing industry included 207 companies that reported employment of 31,197 workers during 2003, which is up 3.4 percent from 2002. Researchers from the Office for Economic Development at UAH predict strong growth for the industry during the next two or three years.
"The automotive industry is already a vital part of our state's economy, and there is an indication it will provide substantially more jobs for Alabamians in the next few years," said Alabama's Governor, Bob Riley.
