Alabama Horse Industry Profile
The Alabama horse industry directly produces goods and services valued exceeding 573 million dollars. The equine industry has nearly a one billion-dollar impact on the Alabama economy when the multiplier effect of spending by owners, industry suppliers, and employees is taken into account. Accounting for off-site spending of event participants and spectators would result in an even higher figure. Over 44,000 Alabama households are involved in the industry as horse owners, service providers, employees and volunteers. Even more participate as spectators. Nearly every county has a show facility, a local horse association, and a regular pattern of equine events, shows, or competitions. Birmingham is the home of one racetrack with a spring and early summer season that features thoroughbred/quarter horse racing and year-round simulcast viewing some other tracks for pari-mutuel purposes. Alabama's agricultural sector generates about 20% of the State's total gross product. About 15% of this is horse-related.

By James R. Bennett. McCalla: Alabama Historic Ironworks Commission, 1999. xviii, 469 pp. $38.95 (cloth). ISBN 0-9674455-0-7. $22.95 (paper). ISBN 0-9674455-1-5. Alabama's secretary of state Jim Bennett has been instrumental in the development of the Tannehill Ironworks Historical State Park and has produced a lavishly illustrated book on the development, growth, and ultimate destruction of this installation. He correctly points out that the story of Tannehill belies the popular idea that southern industry was technologically backward. This ironwork, in fact, incorporated certain innovations that were not commonly used elsewhere until many years after the Civil War.

Save a personal copy of this article and quickly find it again with Furl.net. It's free! Save it. From Hills and Hollers: Rise of the Poultry Industry in Arkansas. By Stephen F Strausberg. Fayetteville, Ark.: Arkansas Agricultural Experiment Station, 1995. x, 221 pp. Free. Stephen Strausberg's pithy examination of the history of the Arkansas poultry industry is important to Alabamians because "the growth patterns in the poultry industry in Arkansas paralleled developments in other Southern states, including . . . Alabama" (p. 78). Alabama farmers have increased the number of broilers sold by 30 percent between 1987 and 1992, and a significant industry has developed in the counties between Birmingham and Huntsville. The last scholarly examination of the Alabama poultry industry was James Govers Hand's 1970 master's thesis, and Strausberg's work provides a model for much-needed further work on the growth of poultry production in the Heart of Dixie.

Something in the Air: The Asbestos Document Story Internal documents from asbestos companies and their insurers prove they knew the hazards of asbestos and concealed this information from workers for decades. The push in Congress by defendant industries to establish a national asbestos victims trust fund is driven in large part by the fact that courts consistently find asbestos companies guilty, not just of exposing their workers to a substance — asbestos — that could kill or severely injure them, but of doing this with full knowledge of the fatal consequences of their actions, and of actively concealing this truth from these same workers.

ECONOMIC IMPACT ALABAMA TRAVEL INDUSTRY 2004
April 15, 2005 Submitted to Lee Sentell, Director Alabama Bureau of Tourism and Travel M. Keivan Deravi, PH.D. Project Technical Consultant Professor of Economics School of Business Pam Smith Research Specialist Center for Business and Economic Development Auburn University Montgomery 600 South Court Street, Suite 110 Montgomery, AL 36104 Tel: (334) 244-3700 Fax: (334) 244-3718
Executive Summary
A note to the 2004 travel and tourism impact analysis: 2004 was an eventful, if not unusual, year for tourism in Alabama. With four hurricanes (Charley, Frances, Ivan, and Jeanne) and a major tropical storm (Bonnie), we observed a series of one-time events that impacted the overall tourism landscape for 2004 and beyond. More specifically, the influx of evacuees from Florida due to Hurricanes Charley, Frances, and Jeanne and Tropical Storm Bonnie, caused Alabama to experience a significant increase in its lodging demand, particularly in the eastern and central regions of the state. Hurricane Ivan crippled the tourism flow to the Alabama Gulf Coast region. However, temporary construction workers, along with FEMA personnel, emergency relief workers, and insurance adjusters created an unusual demand for available lodging throughout Mobile and Baldwin counties, along with other areas of south Alabama during the fourth quarter of 2004.

Title: Alabama's forest products industry: performance and contribution to the State's economy, 1970 to 1980 Author: Maki, Wilbur R.; Schallau, Con H; Foster, Bennett B.; Redmond, Clair H. Date: Source: Res. Pap. PNW-361. Portland, OR: U.S. Department of Agriculture, Forest Service, Pacific Northwest Research Station. 22 p. Station ID: RP-PNW-361 Description: Employment and earnings in Alabama's forest products industry, like those of most Southern States, grew significantly between 1970 and 1980. The forest products industry accounted for a larger share of the State's economic base. in 1980 than in 1970. Of the 13 Southern States, only 5 had more forest products industry employment than Alabama. Moreover, during this period, the State increased its share of the Nation's forest products industry employment and earnings. Paper and allied products had the highest productivity and experienced the largest increase in productivity between 1972 and 1977.
