Focused Industry Training Program to Boost Employment for Alabama Citizens
MONTGOMERY - Gov. Bob Riley was joined by workforce development officials and a representative from Mercedes-Benz's Tuscaloosa County plant today to announce a new initiative that helps train adults for existing jobs that become vacant when workers leave them for employment at Alabama's growing automotive industry. The new Focused Industry Training (FIT) program will provide training and job placement services at 34 sites across the state, concentrated in areas around Alabama's automotive manufacturing plants. "We are seeing a gap in the number of skilled workers available for existing industries when their employees leave for jobs in the auto industry," Gov. Riley said. "This new effort will increase the pool of skilled workers who can take these newly vacant jobs, boost their careers and sustain Alabama's economic growth." The job training will be conducted by personnel from 13 of Alabama's two-year community and technical colleges.
