General State History
Spanish explorers are believed to have arrived at Mobile Bay in 1519, and the territory was visited in 1540 by the explorer Hernando de Soto. The first permanent European settlement in alabama was founded by the French at Fort Louis de la Mobile in 1702. The British gained control of the area in 1763 by the Treaty of Paris, but had to cede almost all the alabama region to the U.S. after the american Revolution. The Confederacy was founded at Montgomery in February 1861 and, for a time, the city was the Confederate capital.

He was King's chosen successor as head of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) (196877). although he was a competent leader, the SCLC never regained the influence it had under King. He resigned the SCLC leadership to run unsuccessfully for andrew Young's congressional seat (1977). Turning away from the civil rights movement, he devoted his attention to the West Hunter Street Baptist Church and the issues of worldwide peace.

"Friendliest City in the South"
Luverne, the Friendliest City in the South, was founded in 1889, one mile east of the Patsaliga River on the Alabama Midland Railroad in the central part of Crenshaw County. The primary figures in the founding of Luverne were M.P. Legrand, S.D. Hubbard, and George A. Folmar who purchased land surrounding the railroad, which would become the site of the new town. Luverne grew very quickly due to its advantageous location relative to other more established communities in the county. By 1890, it boasted nineteen businesses and a population of approximately 1,000 people. In 1893 a vote by the people moved the county seat from Rutledge to Luverne where a new courthouse was constructed. The booming young town which just four years earlier was a pine forest had become the center of business, government and social events for Crenshaw County. Early History of Luverne, Alabama

Welcome to Franklin County Alabama
A rich history Franklin County is rich in history with a number of interesting tales to be told, one of which is here on this page. The county was established February 4, 1814 by the Alabama Territorial Legislature, preceded only by Madison (1808), Mobile(1812) and Clark (1812) counties, which had been organized from Mississippi territory. Illustrious American patriot Benjamin Franklin had been dead less than 30 years, when a large tract of land in Northwest Alabama was dubbed Franklin County in his honor. The county originally extended north to the Tennessee River, but a parcel was later divided off and became Colbert County. It is a land that once was called home by several Indian Tribes, most notably the Chickasaws, Creeks and Cherokees.

Mobile, then called Fort Louis de la Louisiana, was founded and designated the first capital of the Louisiana territory which extended from Canada to the Gulf of Mexico. The fort was first located on the Mobile River north of the present site, but a flood caused its removal to the present locations in 1711. The fort was rebuilt in 1717 and named Fort Conde. The name Mobile is derived from Mobile or Maubila Indians who inhabited the region. The Treaty of Paris ceded Mobile to the control of Great Britain during which time the colony flourished. The name of the Fort was changed to Fort Charlotte in honor of the young English queen. Spain declared war on England. A siege was laid against Fort Charlotte and early that year Mobile fell into Spanish hands. Mobile was captured by United States forces under General James Wilkinson from both British and Spanish defenders. The next year, general Andrew Jackson established his headquarters here and successfully defended Mobile against British invaders. Mobile began a period of great prosperity and become the commercial center of Alabama and Mississippi. For a brief period after Alabama seceded from the Union, the Republic of Alabama flag flew over Mobile. Later, the flag of the Confederate States of America was flown.

Welcome to the rural town of Alabama in Genesee County,
New York. The town was settled in 1812 and originally called
primarily a farming community. The population, as of the 1990
census, is 1,998.
Our town consists of four Hamlets. Alabama Center, South
Alabama, Wheatville and Basom. During the 1800's there was
also a community called West Alabama, located in the
northwest corner of the town. Alabama shared much of its
early history with the Town of Royalton in Niagara County; and
the Town of Shelby in Orleans County.
Alabama has three major areas. Agricultural and residential is the largest section. The Tonawanda Indian Reservation, home of the Seneca Nation, covers the land on the west side of the town. To the north is the Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge. This refuge covers 10,818 acres and extends into Orleans County. It is the largest federal wildlife Refuge in New

ALABAMA LEGISLATIVE HISTORY
OVERVIEW
The Legislative History section of the Alabama Legislature website is devoted to providing the public with as much information as possible regarding the various legislative bodies which have represented Alabama, beginning with the territorial era. This will include the Mississippi and Alabama territorial governments, the Alabama Legislature, and Constitutional Conventions. Congressional history will be examined only incidentally, as detailed and comprehensive information on the history of the United States Congress can be found at Thomas , the Congressional website maintained by the Library of Congress. In addition, links to Alabama's United States Representatives and Senators can be found at United States Government And Information Links A great portion of the Legislative History section contains specific, unedited documents, as many of these documents are not readily available to the public, often leaving students of Alabama history with no choice but to trust the varying interpretations and extrapolations of authors on the subject. While overviews are presented for each section, as a means of summarizing the contents and providing some chronological cohesion, the documents speak for themselves, and thus, are indisputable. The major areas covered within these pages are Territorial Government Constitutions Past Leadership and Further Archival Research The
