One suggestion is that the name comes from the Indian term meaning A Place of Rest. According to the Alabama state website, Alabama was the name of an early Indian tribe that inhabited the the area that is now central Alabama at the time of the early European explorers. The first settlement in 1702 at Mobile Bay was established by the French. Alabama Territory was created in 1817 and became the twenty-second state on December 13, 1819. Historic Facts and Overview
Agriculture was practiced by Indians such as the Creeks and Cherokee in the east, and the Choctaws and Chickasaws in the west when Spanish explorers arrived. The first known European contact with what would become Alabama occurred in 1519 when Alonso Alvarez de Pineda sailed in Mobile Bay. Cabeza de Vaca (and possibly Pánfilo de Narvaez) visited Alabama in 1528, and the Spanish did not really explore the area for another two decades, when Hernando de Soto led an expedition into the region about 1540.
Conflict between the Spanish and local Indian tribes, as well as French and English explorers, kept the Spanish from establishing a colony. The first permanent European settlers in Alabama were French. The LeMoyne brothers, Pierre LeMoyne, Sieur d'Iberville, and Jean Baptiste LeMoyne, Sieur de Bienville, sailed into Mobile Bay in 1699, and in 1702 the French were established at Fort Louis de la Mobile, the first permanent European presence, near present day Mobile.
The French and British contended for the furs gathered by Native Americans. The British gained control of the area in 1763 by the Treaty of Paris after the French and Indian Wars, but had to cede almost all the Alabama region to the U.S. and Spain after the American Revolution. When Spain declared war on Great Britain in 1779, the American Revolution came to Alabama. In 1780, Bernardo Galvez captured Mobile from the British. At the close of the American Revolution, Great Britain ceded (1783) to the United States all lands east of the Mississippi except the Floridas (see West Florida Controversy). The Territory of Mississippi, which included parts of present-day Alabama, was set up in 1798, but the land was still largely a wilderness with a considerable fur trade, centered at Saint Stephens, and with only the beginnings of cotton cultivation.

Across Alabama's Black Belt on Highway 80
Called the Black Belt because of its rich, dark soil, the area of south Alabama traversed by Highway 80 on its route across the southern U.S. was the staging ground for some of Alabama's most significant moments in history. It was here that DeSoto met Tuscaloosa, cotton plantations flourished, the Confederacy was born, and civil rights were won. Follow Highway 80 through Demopolis, Selma, Montgomery, and Tuskegee on a journey through Alabama history.

BURNT CORN HISTORY
Burnt Corn, Alabama settlement started sometimes after the Revoltionary War. Burnt Corn is located at two old trails known then as "Three Notch Trail" and "Old Wolf Path." On April 7, 1798, the United States had formed the Mississippi Territory which included what is now the states of Alabama and Mississippi. The Creek Indians Nation also covered the same territory. The Creek Indian Nation controlled access in and out of the nation which required passes to travel into the Creek nation land. There were some traders allowed in and some even intermarried in the Creek Tribe and was allowed to stay and build homes. The traders made trading posts at their homestead for the Indians and travelers that was passing on their way westward. They were Burnt Corn, Conecuh and Monroe counties first residents. The area was known as Burnt Corn Springs. When the United States purchased the Louisiana Territory from France in 1803, they needed a land route between New Orleans and Washington. In 1805, the U.S. Government got the Creek Nation to give permission for a "horse path" through the Creek Nation. This "horse path" followed two well known Indian trails, the "Chiaha Alibamo Trail" (near present day, Montgomery, Alabama) and the famous
