Education Roanoke City Schools I t is a well-known condition of contemporary life that most communities balk at new taxes, even for so vital a function as education. Yet, in Roanoke, the City Council conducted several surveys and received an overwhelmingly positive response to enacting a one-cent sales tax for school building construction and renovation. The result has been the construction of a new middle school and the renovation of several existing buildings. A t Roanoke City Schools , we are proud of our achievement in state standardized test scores. The Alabama High School Basic Skills Exit Examination is required of all students in order to graduate from high school. Handley High School recently received a first-time takers' pass rate of 94% in reading, and 92% in both language and mathematics, which is unusually high for any Alabama High School. On the state test given to all students completing Algebra I, our students scored the third highest in all of Alabama and, on the writing assessment given to all fifth graders in Alabama, our students' scores were among the highest in all of Alabama. A ll students in Alabama from grade three through eleven take the Stanford Achievement Test, Edition 9. This test is normalized nation-wide. Laurie Lang leads kindergarten students on a gingerbread man hunt on the first day of school at Burleson Elementary in Hartselle on Thursday in an effort to get the students acquainted with the facility. In a presentation he termed "part sermon, part report," Morton described how Alabama's public schools measured in the second year of work with the stringent No Child requirements. In addition to student participation in tests, key measurement areas include those that affect student performance. While 313 of the state's 1,366 schools did not meet the minimum scores necessary for adequate yearly progress, Morton noted that 725 schools succeeded. In 2004, 427 of the 1,361 schools met the necessary requirements. And while 313 have problems this year in at least one of four major measurement categories, Morton said many missed the mark by a small margin. School attendance during testing periods, one factor that is measured, improved significantly in 2005, he added.

Frankfort, KY (March 17, 2004) -
Trigg County public schools made it a clean sweep yesterday, winning the elementary, middle and high school divisions of the third annual National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) in Louisville’s International Convention Center. Last year’s top two individual shooters remained unbeatable, and repeated as this year’s national overall champions. Trigg County junior Graham Cofield in the male division and Pulaski County freshman Ashley Rose successfully defended their 2004 titles against about 1,800 challengers from more than 100 schools from four states. Cofield was nearly perfect with a 298 score out of a possible 300. Rose fired a 283 to repeat as the overall female shooter. The event was the largest student archery event in U.S. history.

Product Manufacturing Community Toyota Awards $550,000 in Grants to K-12 Science Teachers April 1, 2005 - Toyota TAPESTRY, the largest science teacher grant program in the nation, awarded nearly $550,000 in grants to 50 K-12 U.S. teachers. Fifty received up to $10,000 each and 27 received mini-grants of up to $2,500 each. Large grant winners received their awards on March 31 at the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) National Convention in Dallas, where Toyota celebrated the 15th anniversary of TAPESTRY. More than $6.5 million has been awarded to 750 teams of teachers throughout the program's history. "Toyota has made a significant commitment to science education through the TAPESTRY program," said Gerry Wheeler, NSTA executive director. "Our successful collaboration has rewarded thousands of outstanding educators who demonstrate excellence, creativity, and vision in science teaching. We thank them for their partnership and their unwavering commitment to science teachers and to science education."
Toyota awards grants to deserving kindergarten through twelfth-grade teachers each year. Judges select projects that demonstrate creativity, involve risk-taking, and possess a visionary quality in three critical areas: environmental and physical science, and science applications that promote literacy. This year's projects range from evaluating emissions data from alternative fuel sources to investigating the effect of septic tank leakage on the local water supply.
