Password: Who We Are: Current Programs Adirondack Scholars Description:
Adirondack Scholars evolved from the Adirondack Excellent Schools Program (AESP), which over the past four years has focused on 12 rural central schools located in the Adirondack region of New York State. Charitable Venture Foundation, joined by several local sources, has supported the work of the 12 AESP schools. A comprehensive assessment of AESP was completed in June 2005 and is reported in a monograph written by David Holmes and Rick Dalton, entitled Peak Experiences: Raising Aspirations and Educational Achievement of Rural Youth in Adirondack Communities , published in August 2005. In 2005-06, the expanded Adirondack Scholars initiative will involve a total of 20 central schools, each targeting a cohort of at least 50 students to participate in program activities. Adirondack Scholars is funded by Charitable Venture Foundation and the Daniels Fund, as well as other sources. As in AESP, regional colleges will partner with the schools to help them strengthen student performance and raise educational aspirations. These colleges include Clarkson, Clinton Community, North Country Community, Saint Lawrence, Skidmore, Paul Smith's, SUNY Plattsburgh, and Union in New York; Middlebury, Castleton State, and Saint Michael's in Vermont; and Williams in Massachusetts.

Alabama Holds First State Archery Championship
May 17, 2004 Students participated in Alabama ’s first annual “National Archery in the Schools Program” Championship on April 29. The event, held at the Alabama Wildlife Federation headquarters in Millbrook, featured 220 students representing 11 schools. Three-person teams competed in Elementary (K-6), Middle (7-8) and High School (9-12) divisions. Students shot 30 arrows, 15 each from distances of 10 and 15 meters. On site to assist with the event was Rod White, a two-time Olympic Archery medalist. White is taking archery to the nation’s youth through the Matthews Genesis project. “It’s a very big deal for our industry,” said White who won gold at the 1996 Atlanta games, and bronze at the 2000 Sydney games. “We’re pleased to have Alabama as a part of this. Who knows? Maybe, one of these kids will win a gold medal someday.” Alabama is the second state to implement this program patterned after Kentucky ’s “National Archery in the Schools Program.” Sixteen schools (two from each of the state’s Board of Education districts) were chosen for the pilot program in 2003. The program is a partnership between the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources’ Division of Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries and the State Department of Education. It is being taught in 25

June 14, 2005 archive IT WAS A GOOD WEEK FOR: West Jasper Elementary School which was the recipient of the Sixth Annual National Change Award given by the American Association of Schools Administrators, Pearson Education and the Fordham University Graduate School of Education. The award recognizes schools that have made significant changes and had great success in raising the achievement of all students. In his remarks to the State Board of Education, Principal Eric Smith attributed the success of West Jasper to four things:
  • The school participates fully in the Alabama Reading Initiative and has switched from whole-group instruction to individualized and small-group instruction The faculty uses assessments to drive instruction, monitoring each student's progress and tailoring classroom instruction to build upon students' strengths and strengthen their weaknesses
