Recreational Counties in Nonmetropolitan America Kenneth M. Johnson , Loyola University-Chicago, Chicago, IL Calvin L. Beale , U.S. Department of Agriculture, Washington, DC Nonmetropolitan counties with large concentrations of recreational activity have experienced substantial population growth since 1990. The population growth rate for recreational counties is among the highest of any identifiable group of counties. Most of the growth in such counties has come from migration (more people moving to the counties and fewer leaving). Recreational counties are widely dispersed geographically, but there are significant concentrations in several areas of the country. Click on above image to view related article. Overview This web page summarizes recent research on recreational counties in nonmetropolitan areas of the United States (Johnson and Beale, ; Beale and Johnson, ). It identifies 327 nonmetropolitan counties with significant concentrations of recreational activity (Listing of Recreation Counties) . Such counties have enjoyed substantial population growth recently. Since 1990, nonmetropolitan recreational counties have grown by 20.2 percent, compared to an 13.2 percent gain for the US as a whole. Analysis of demographic data from 1970 to 2000 suggests that these recreational counties have enjoyed significant population gains in each of the three decades. The rapid population gains in such counties has significant implications both demographically and for planning purposes. Geographic Distribution
