Professional:
Thanks for stopping by. I am a graduate of Florida State University and attended graduate school at the University of Florida. Since then I have been a faculty member in the Department of Geography at Auburn University . I enjoy working with students, and I have taught many different courses in my career. Take a look at the page for my Honors section of the course: Society, Culture, and the Environment . One of the more interesting things I have done with students has been to lead a summer study-abroad program in Latin America. I have worked on many projects and committess, and have recently served as the president of the local chapter of the AAUP . I am active in various regional organizations, such as the Alabama Geographic Alliance , the Alabama Latin Americanists Society , and various national professional associations. Here's my vitae , in case you may be interested. Latin America has been an important part of my life. I grew up in Brazil where I still have many friends and contacts. For several years I served as the Director of the Auburn University Institute for Latin American Studies , and I have been able to travel in most countries of the Western Hemisphere. My research interests have varied over the years. I have developed computer applications in geography, studied migration, delved into historical geography, and published works on geographic education. Most recently, in collaboration with my brother, I published a book through the University of Alabama Press titled "The Confederados." The book describes the events and consequenses of the migration of Americans from the Old South who, immediately after the Civil War, settled in Brazil. The migration had interesting consequences because some elements of the North American culture (such as the English language) still persist near the city of Americana, SP.

Lesson 2: Geography Determines History
2. Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of this lesson, students should be able to: Describe the geographic location of the Creek War.
Name the rivers where the battles took place.
Analyze the importance of geographic features in planning battles.
Describe the importance of mapping roads through the wilderness.
Analyze the importance of maps in planning military strategy.
Debate the relevance of the statement: Geography determines history. 2. Suggested Activity for Entire lesson Make a copy of Documents and for each student.
Ask the students to arrange the maps in chronological order. They may use their textbooks or other references to help with this.
After students complete these tasks, organize the class into four groups. Assign one map to each group. Ask each group to use the general guidelines for analyzing a map and compile their observations and report their conclusions to the class. 2. Suggested Activity for Document 1: Note that the orientation of the map is unusual - the title and names of sites, printed sideways, distort the traditional north-south orientation. You may need to bring this to the attention of younger children; older students should discover this in their analysis.
Use this map to locate forts, battles, towns, etc., mentioned in other documents relating to the Creek War.

Alabama. American FactFinder (U.S. Census) Alabama, "The Heart of Dixie"
Abbreviation:
AL The etymology of the word or name, Alabama, has evoked much discussion. It was the name of an Indian tribe (Alabama, Albama, Alebamon, Alibama, Alibamou, Alibamon, Alabamu, and Allibamou). Alabama possibly means "Here We Rest", but it could also mean "thicket clearers", Alabama being a compound of Alba meaning "a thick or mass vegetation," and amo meaning "to clear, to collect, to gather up." Alabama became the 22nd state in 1819. From the early 19th century, Alabama's economy was dominated by cotton. However, although it is still an important crop, such as corn, peanuts, soybeans have taken over much of the former cotton lands. Particularly in the second half of the 20th century, a comparatively rapid industrialization set in. The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) program of hydroelectric power production, begun in the 1930s, fostered the growth of giant fertilizer, munitions, and aluminum industries. Alabama, known as "Heart of Dixie" occupies a central place in the history of the South. Montgomery, the Alabama capital, served as the first Confederate Capital during the Civil War. Tourists can visit Alabama's historic homes and gardens, reminiscent of the Old South. Also popular are the resorts and beaches on Dauphin Island, the Gulf Shore and Mobile Bay.
