As of the population was 43,671. Its county seat is Prattville
History
Autauga County was established on November 21 by an act of Alabama Territorial Legislature (one year before Alabama was admitted as a State). As established, the county included present-day Autauga County, as well as Elmore County and Chilton County . At the time, Autauga Indians lived here, primarily in a village named Atagi (meaning "pure water") situated on the banks of a creek by the same name (called "Pearl Water Creek" by settlers). Autaugas were members of the Alibamu tribe. They sent many warriors to resist Andrew Jackson 's invasion in the Creek War. This county was part of the territory ceded by the Creeks in the Treaty of Fort Jackson in . The first county seat was at Jackson's Mill , but the court only met there long enough to select a permanent seat at Washington , built on the former site of Atagi in the southeast corner of the county. June Hollis
My name is June Hollis, and this was my first web site. I teach Advanced World Geography at Brandon High School in Brandon, Mississippi. I have taught English and social studies for 25 years at schools in the central Mississippi area including Florence Junior and High Schools, Chastain Junior High, and Pearl Junior High and have been at Brandon for 18 years. It is a wonderful school with wonderful students, faculty, and administration. I am lucky to call it home. I am a HUGE Brandon football fan! I earned my BS in English and History at the University of Southern Mississippi in 1965 and my Masters in Education with emphasis in History from Mississippi State University in 1980. I have earned post-graduate hours in geography and history from the University of North Alabama, University of Missouri at Columbia, California State at Chico, University of West Georgia, Mississippi University for Women, Mississippi State University, and University of Mississippi. In the summer of 1998, I received a Hayes Fulbright grant to study Eastern Europe. Along with fifteen other teachers from Mississippi, I spent five weeks in Prague, Czech Republic and Bratislava, Slovak Republic studying architecture, art, history, literature, government, and other subjects. We traveled extensively throughout the region. This web site is a result of that trip. I hope to be able to post works done by students from anywhere. Please contact me if you are interested in contributing or participating in this project.

ALABAMA'S ENDANGERED HISTORIC LANDMARKS FOR 2003 ONCE AGAIN, THE ALABAMA HISTORICAL COMMISSION AND THE ALABAMA PRESERVATION ALLIANCE HAVE TEAMED UP TO PROFILE HISTORIC SITES THROUGHOUT THE STATE THAT ARE IN DANGER OF BEING LOST TO ALABAMIANS FOREVER. THIS YEAR MARKS THE TENTH YEAR THAT the Alabama Preservation Alliance and the Alabama Historical Commission have collaborated to designate some of Alabama's most imperiled historic sites and structures as "Places in Peril." The listing is meant to raise awareness about landmarks that often reflect little-known aspects of our heritage. Though under threat, these landmarks all share a similar potential: the potential to engage local support and foster grassroots activity that will keep them around for future generations to see and enjoy. It is this potential that Places in Peril highlights and encourages.

Volume 2
Cemetery Locations by County, by W. Craig Remington, 1999
by Steve Paul Johnson
February 16, 2002 This book can provide genealogists, historians, and cemetery enthusiasts with a wealth of information about the existence of cemeteries and their locations throughout the State of Alabama. A cemetery enthusiast needs a resource that provides the names and locations of cemeteries. Those in Alabama will find " Historical Atlas of Alabama, Volume 2, Cemetery Locations by County " as one of their best resources. Packed with over 600 pages of maps, cemetery locations, notes, and bibliography, this atlas is the most thorough cemetery directory for the State of Alabama to date. Author W. Craig Remington and his students at the University of Alabama, Department of Geography have identified over 13,700 cemeteries, including those of unknown names and uncertain locations. Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge The book is divided up into 67 sections, one for each county. Each section includes a full color map pinpointing the location of each cemetery. A table organizes all the cemeteries in alphabetical order by name, and provides the location in township/range/section. Next to each cemetery, are notes that identify church affiliation, facts and figures, and predominant surnames.
