Legislative Agenda: Alabama Education Snapshot: New ALEC Report Ranks Alabama 47th
October 11, 2004 A report from Michael Ciamarra, vice president, Alabama Policy Institute Birmingham - Peter Drucker, management guru and acute observer of social/economic trends warns that America's current economic supremacy could be compromised by poor quality education. Today's increasingly knowledge based economy requires a public education system that produces graduates who are better educated and more technically savvy than prior generations. The nations' largest bi-partisan state legislators group, the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) has released a new study Report Card on American Education: A State-by-State Analysis: 1981-2003. Their bottom line findings indicate that 73 percent of public school eighth graders taking the 2003 NAEP mathematics exam performed below the "proficiency" level and that 32 percent of eighth graders taking the exam performed below the "basic" level.
