  • Letters President's Viewpoint People Resources ... Past Issues It may have sounded good to some, but this law is heading down the wrong track. What it means to youand what NEA's doing about it. Photo by Nancy J. Pierce A little over a year ago, President George W. Bush sat at a worn, wooden desk in the gymnasium of Ohio's Hamilton High School and put his signature to a massive federal law called the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB). Here, the President declared before a foot-stomping crowd, was the symbol of a "new era" begun. And it was true. Not in four decades had Washington served up such a sweeping overhaul of federal education policy. Passed in Congress with bipartisan support, the 1,100-page billthe latest incarnation of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965markedly expanded the federal government's role in education, prescribed mandates to the states, and along the way touted goals almost nobody could dispute: Close the student achievement gap, make public schools accountable, set standards of excellence for every child, put a qualified teacher in every classroom.

A majority of states have reorganized or reduced department of education staff and/or introduced changes in state board structure or authority. One tool states use is the oversight commission. Commissions vary widely in scope of duties, structure and composition. Some have a very specific purview and limited term of operation, while others are broad in scope and ongoing in nature. All, however, seem to have accountability as a general goal, although their role is advisory. Here is a look at how some states structure and use education commissions. State Commission Information Alabama Ala. Code The Alabama Education Study Commission is designated as a standards on excellence commission. The commission is currently responsible for examining the public elementary and secondary schools and making an annual report on the status of public education. The Commission examines the required courses, testing programs for teacher candidates, promotion and retention standards, student assessment programs and the performance-based accreditation standards, as well as overall compliance under The Alabama Education Improvement Act of 1991 (Acts 1991, No. 91-323), and reports its findings to the governor, legislature and the state board.

Circular ANR-742 Numerous federal and state laws contain provisions affecting agricultural land use and land use patterns. Many of these laws were originally passed over 20 years ago. An increased ability to monitor and measure environmental problems and new information on the environmental impacts of agricultural practices have prompted amendments to and changes in the laws. In addition, as environmental awareness and concern has grown, new environmental laws have been passed. The purpose of this fact sheet is to describe briefly some of the important provisions of environmental legislation and the ways in which the regulations may affect land use decisions. Land owners and managers are responsible for compliance with federal and state statutes; failure to comply could be costly in some cases. Federal Legislation

    Alabama Board Of Education
Alabama Board Of Education - If you’re planning on moving to Alabama with school-age children, or if you already live in Alabama, you might be interested in learning more about the Alabama Board of Education. This board of education works hard to make sure that all the public schools in Alabama meet state and federal standards for public schools. The board of education also works to make a list of all the information you might possibly need while your children are in a public school – from a list of different tutoring services, to a list of places where you can get financial aid.
The Alabama Board of Education provides plenty of information about how accountable the schools are – so if you’re worried about whether or not the school you want to send your children to is good enough, you can check through the board of education and make sure. You can also find out what you need to do to decide what school your child will go to in the state of Alabama, since you’ll be able to look up all your options. You can find out whether or not you’ll be able to send your child to a private school, or homeschool if that doesn’t work.
By contacting the Board of Education, you can also get information that explains what is required for people to be hired as new teachers. This is useful, since if you’re not sure what state you’d like to move to, it will help you decide where the teachers are the most qualified to teach your child. You can also find out what you need to do to be certified as a teacher in the state of Alabama if that is your ideal job. Unlike some states where teachers are accepted no matter what (and in some cases without certification), in Alabama, all teachers are tested before they are given jobs to make sure that they know what they should before they’re put in control of a classroom.
