Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Feature Article
Kinship Care: Grandparents and Relatives as Parents
By: Dr. Wilma J. Ruffin, Many grandparents in the United States (US) are finding grandparenthood different from what they expected. Instead of the occasional visits from their grandchildren, they have taken on the role of primary parents to their grandchildren. According to 2000 US Census data, six million (8.4 percent) of all children under the age of 18 are living in grandparent or other relative-maintained households across the nation. The Census further found that nearly 5.8 million grandparents are living in households with one or more of their own grandchildren under the age of 18. More than 2.4 million of these grandparents are primarily responsible for meeting the basic needs of these children. In Alabama, more than 113,000 (10.1 percent) children are now living in these conditions.

Bizarre Stuff You Can Make In Your Kitchen
This site is an ever growing warehouse of the kinds of projects some of the more demented of us tried as young people, collecting in one place many of the classic, simple science projects that have become part of the collective lore of amateur science. It is a sort of warped semi-scientific cookbook of tricks, gimmicks, and pointless experimentation, concoctions, and devices, using, for the most part, things found around the house. These are the classics. Strange goo, radios made from rusty razor blades, crystal gardens... amateur mad scientist stuff. If you happen to learn something in the process, consider yourself a better person for it.

Head Start Program The Alabama-Coushatta reservation administers numerous federal programs including a Head Start Program. Head Start is a comprehensive four-day program, aimed at helping each child develop skills, which will enable him/her to function optimally in his/her environment. The program has been serving the Alabama-Coushatta continuously since 1965 and a diverse population of low-income residents living in the Polk County area. The residents plan within the framework of the organization to assist in meeting the educational needs of the children. Operating Hours : The Program and Benefits Statement of Purpose Facilities
The Program and Benefits Head Start is designed to meet the needs of the community and the families of the children. The program is the first step in a child's public education and can be most successful when parents become involved at the beginning stages. An open line of communication between staff and parents is required to keep parents actively involved with program planning, carrying out responsibilities through the Policy Council, volunteer participation, insight into child development, and most importantly, planning for and participating in the transition that their child will make from Head Start to Kindergarten.
