Parent Involvement
The goal of all PTA activities is to involve parents and family in children's education. A key Object of the PTA is "to bring into closer relation the home and school, that parents and teachers may cooperate intelligently in the education of children and youth." Usually it is not lack of interest that keeps parents from becoming involved in their children's education. Often there are barriers in the way. It is the responsibility of the PTA to spot these barriers and to work to lower them. Some barriers are: lack of time, feeling like they have nothing to contribute, lack of child care, and accessing transportation, etc. Many parents would like to play a more active role in their children's education, but they do not know how-therefore a commitment to develop a parent involvement program is essential. PTA leadership should develop a strong program for parent and family involvement to fulfill the following Objectives:
OBJECTIVES
To improve parent/family involvement.

Preface
In this final report, we outline a model of parent education that provides common ground for extension professionals throughout the Cooperative Extension System. The National Extension Parent Education Model (NEPEM) is a dynamic approach to parent education constructed through consensus. We hope you find inspiration and direction for your parent education programming within the pages of this document. This report is intended primarily for professionals or committed volunteers who deliver parent education programs and for decision makers and advocates. It is not meant to be given directly to parents. NEPEM is not a parent education program. It is a compilation of priority parent practices and supporting material to be used as a basis for parent education efforts. It also can be used to communicate our priorities to those outside of extension who might be unfamiliar with our goals and programs. Resources listed in the Curriculum Guide section are examples of more specific parent education programs that are consistent with the model. Please contact the authors of these resources if you want to learn more about them.

Summary of 1999 Funded State Improvement Grant Applications
August 1999 ALABAMA Abstract or Conceptual Framework for State Systemic Change
Improving the Performance and Success of Alabama's Students with Disabilities The areas that need improvement for students with disabilities in Alabama can be summarized as:
  • Poor academic performance. High dropout rate. High suspension and expulsion rate. Inadequate numbers of teaching and service personnel to fill some critical positions.
To address these critical needs, the state of Alabama is submitting a proposal for a State Improvement Grant to the United States Department of Education, Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP). The five year project is a systems change effort at the four following goals:
  • To improve reading skills of students with disabilities. To improve the numbers of students with disabilities who drop out. To reduce suspensions and expulsions for the students with disabilities.
To reduce special education teacher turnover and increase the numbers of fully credentialed teachers. ALABAMA Basic Information

70. Recruiting Support Personnel As Teachers
Specially trained educational support personnel work as parent resourcecoordinators in alabama League for the Advancement of education PO Box 6234
http://www.schoolrenewal.org/strategies/i-supportp-af.html
Recruiting Support Personnel as Partners in Teaching Community Excellence The context: As many as 90% of educational support personnel are recruited from the communities in which they work, compared to 40% of teachers. In addition to being part of the school community, educational support personnel reflect the ethnic, racial and socioeconomic diversity of the students they serve. Students benefit when schools, parents, and community members work together on their behalf. Educational support personnel are in an ideal position to strengthen education by promoting good communication between the school and the community. School Renewal Through Building a Learning Community with All School Personnel Educational support personnel are taking on new roles in schools. With the help of their educational support personnel, schools are making dramatic changes in the way they serve children and their families. The educational support personnel are key players in new programs, serve new roles in health and safety and have new responsibilities as decision-makers. Specially trained educational support personnel work as "parent resource coordinators" in Richmond, Virginia. They design activities that support parent involvement. Parent coordinators encourage parents to become active in the PTA, sponsor a GED program, and participate in weekly parent workshops.
