Cooperative Extension Volunteer Water Quality Monitoring Programs
When we first started this project we identified 27 volunteer water quality monitoring programs sponsored or co-sponsored by Cooperative Extension in the United States and its territories. Now we are up to 38! We are always looking for programs we have missed and have had help from people across the country to find 'new' programs. Our latest change to this page was to identify which programs are sponsored or co-sponsored by Cooperative Extension and which are affiliated in other ways such as by providing technical assistance with trainings, educational materials, equipment, or meeting space for volunteer monitoring events. The map above shows where and to what extent Cooperative Extension is involved in volunteer water quality monitoring across the nation. Not shown is an Extension co-sponsored program in American Samoa. The first of these programs began in 1978, the most recent this year. In parentheses next to each program's name is the year that the program began. Program volunteers are monitoring a wide range of aquatic habitats including rivers, streams, lakes, ponds, wetlands, estuaries, and drinking water wells.

Introduction The Ideal Fish Coolwater Fish Farming Opportunities ... Suggested Readings
Introduction
In Virginia and throughout the United States, interest in fish farming for profit or as a hobby has increased in the past few years. Encouraged by the success of trout farmers in western states and catfish farmers in southern states, prospective fish farmers question if similar opportunities exist in Virginia's fresh waters. The prospects for fish farming in Virginia range from very good to poor depending on the objectives (commercial or noncommercial), the economic and water resources available, and the type of fish selected for growing. In this publication we present basic information on fish farming and discuss some of the opportunities and problems involved with growing certain freshwater fish and other aquatic animals in Virginia. New Horticultural Crops for the Southeastern United States
Mary Lamberts
  • FRUIT CROPS
  • Alabama
  • Florida
  • Georgia ...
  • Table 3 There are many reasons for the upsurge in interest in new horticultural crops. One industry expert (Cook 1990) reported that during the period between 1978 and 1989, consumption of fresh produce in the United States expanded 23%. The retail produce industry is now worth $32 billion. While the aging of American consumers also is a factor which can lead to overall reduced food purchases, it also has the potential for proportional increases in fresh fruit and vegetable consumption. Americans between the ages of 55 and 64 consume 39% more fresh fruit and 34% more fresh vegetables than the national average. As consumers move into their peak income-earning years, they purchase more high-value products and look for greater diversity. According to Manning (1990), the American produce industry has been riding the crest of a powerful demographic wave which will flatten by the year 2000. Manning predicts that although the nutritional appeal of fresh fruits and vegetables will continue, health options for consumers will increase; growers will need to create more demand and retailers will need to be convinced that consumers will pay more for produce before raising wholesale prices.
