    Overview
This lesson enables teachers to use blues styles and performers to think about various geographical regions of the United States. By studying different blues styles from the Mississippi Delta, Texas, and the Piedmont region of the Southeastern Coast, or from cities like Memphis and Chicago, students can explore regional geography and culture while also learning about the effects of different environments on musical styles, the relationships between natural resources and social organization, and the cultural legacies of migrations of people from region to region in the United States. Learning Objectives
By completing this lesson, the student will:
    • Explore the major blues styles associated with various regions of the United States Understand the relationship between music and place Learn about the cultural adaptations involved in migration Explain how environments change over time

    THE SOUTHERN COASTLANDS
T he southern margins of the United States can be divided into two approximately equal sections. One half, the Southwest Border Area, shares a long land boundary with Mexico and includes an extensive inland area that has experienced many influences from that country. The other half, which we discuss here, traces the coastline eastward from the mouth of the Rio Grande River in Texas to North Carolina and includes the Florida peninsula ( Map 8 : 23K). Both stretches are southerly in latitude, and they share a small area of overlap in southern Texas, but the Southern Coastlands is as distinct from the Southwest Border Area as are any other two adjacent regions in America. The Southern Coastlands is distinctive for two primary reasons. First, it has a humid, subtropical environment. The warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico also contribute a strong maritime influence to the coastlands' climate. The region has a clear appeal to visitors and potential residents, and its agriculture is distinctive because of this environment. Second, the region's role in generating U.S. trade patterns with the rest of the world and its distinctive industrial pattern also help to define it.

    Geography
    By R. A. Weeks, R. D. Zahnizer, and
    G. L. Chute, U.S. Geological Survey General Appalachia, as defined legislatively, is an irregular shaped area of 185,000 square miles, extending from New York to Alabama. It is about 950 miles long from northeast to southwest and averages 250 miles in width, as shown in plate 1. It includes West Virginia, most of Pennsylvania, and parts of 10 other States. Most of the area is mountainous or hilly, and the major uplands of the eastern United States, collectively known as the Appalachian Highlands, are included within Appalachia. This area differs substantially from the surrounding region in geography and economic development. The Appalachian Highlands are dissected by streams and rivers, most of which flow either into the Atlantic or into tributaries of the Mississippi River. A few streams flow to the Great Lakes, and some flow directly to the Gulf of Mexico. Summits along the drainage divide include the highest elevations in the eastern half of the United States. Many summits approach or exceed 6,000 feet, and Mount Mitchell, in North Carolina, is 6,684 feet high. The pattern of hills, ridges, and mountains, together with their stream systems, depends on the nature of underlying rocks. Four distinctive patterns occur in the Appalachian Highlands, each designated as a physiographic province. The easternmost is the Blue Ridge, in part linear and elsewhere massive. The Valley and Ridge province to the west is characterized by long ridges separated by deep valleys; stream systems tend to be angular and of the type known as trellis pattern. Next westward is the Appalachian Plateaus province, underlain by relatively flat-lying strata; stream patterns are dendritic. A small part of western Appalachia is in the Interior Low Plateaus province, where drainage is dendritic and in some areas is subterranean where it traverses limestone.

Temporal and spatial differences of the two strategies are dynamically related to significant discrepancies in resources among local constituencies as well as between local and nonlocal agents and institutions. Sharp discrepancies undermine local efforts to overcome the subordinate role of the city in its intermediation of international flows of people and products between Mexico and the United States. The next section of this paper describes this intermediary role as the context for the two strategies. The strategies are described in the following two sections, respectively. The final section highlights the sociopolitical implications of the time and space dimensions embedded in each strategy.

The default method the wizard uses for matching is a string match based on the name of the geographical area. For example, the string "Alabama" corresponds to the state of Alabama on the MapPoint map. String matches often work and provide acceptable results, but accuracy is reduced if datasets contain place names that are misspelled, that vary in spelling based on language, or that are duplicates. In addition, abbreviations or codes are sometimes used instead of complete strings to save space in the database. To eliminate the limitations of string matching, MapPoint recognizes a wide variety of standard geographic code schemes and abbreviations as valid values for matching. Many datasets use these codes. Using them to match your data will result in a more accurate data-import process. Figure 1 shows the second page of the Import Data Wizard. Note that the data type of the first column is set to State, because the values in that column are Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) codes (which are described in detail later) for United States states. MapPoint recognizes the 01 in the first row as being equal to the state of Alabama and matches the record to the correct geographic area. Note that the data does not contain state names or abbreviations, although those values would also work.

To most quickly identify which roll or rolls to consult, choose the search window for which you have the most specific, detailed geographic information. Please read the information below before proceeding. Enumeration Districts When the Bureau of the Census assigned areas for census takers to visit when collecting information from residents, it divided counties, cities, towns, villages, Indian reservations, and even hospitals and jails into enumeration districts (ED). Heavily populated areas like major cities would have dozens or even hundreds of EDs while rural counties and places would have only a few or one. Each county was assigned a number, and each ED within it was then numbered consecutively. When the census schedule sheets were compiled, they were arranged by state, county, city or township, and thereunder by ED number. They appear in this order on the microfilm. The Bureau of the Census carefully recorded descriptions of each ED.

One of the great strengths of Microsoft® MapPoint® 2004 is its capability to display your custom data on a map. Any data in which a row represents a piece of geography lends itself to map display. When custom data is displayed on a map it can provide users with insight that no table, chart, or graph can match.
