STUDYING THE HISTORY of agriculture and rural life in Alabama can provide important insights into the development of the state. As part of the United States Agricultural Information Network (USAIN) Preservation Project, Auburn University Libraries recently completed a project that supports scholarship in this area by preserving on microfilm a significant body of literature relating to agriculture and rural life in Alabama. Because the state's population was largely rural until the mid-twentieth century, these publications constitute a rich source of information now available to scholars studying Alabama history. In identifying materials for inclusion in this project, the Auburn project managers defined and interpreted the terms agriculture and rural life somewhat broadly because of the nature of life in Alabama during the years 1820-1945, when the state was almost entirely rural and agriculture provided a livelihood for most of its citizens. Until 1945, when many Alabamians moved into metropolitan areas and the percentage of people engaged in agricultural production declined, almost every facet of life was directly related to or was closely intertwined with agricultural production and rural life. This broad definition of project parameters has allowed the USAIN project to preserve for scholars a substantial body of significant sources on Alabama history.

86. What's At Stake For Alabama?
alabama is an important producer and exporter of agricultural products. Exports remain important to alabama s agricultural and statewide economy.
http://www.fas.usda.gov/info/factsheets/WTO/states/al.html

March 2005
Alabama is an important producer and exporter of agricultural products. In 2003, the State's cash farm receipts totaled $3.4 billion. As for exports, the State's agricultural sales overseas were estimated at $381 million in 2003. Agricultural exports help boost farm prices and income, while supporting about 5,829 jobs both on and off the farm in food processing, storage, and transportation. Exports remain important to Alabama's agricultural and statewide economy. Measured as exports divided by farm cash receipts, the State's reliance on agricultural exports was 11 percent in 2003.
Alabama's top five agricultural exports in 2003 were:
  • poultry and products $182 million cotton $90 million peanuts and products $23 million wheat and products $13 million feeds and fodders $12 million
  • World demand for these products is increasing, but so is competition among suppliers. If Alabama's farmers, ranchers, and food processors are to compete successfully for the export opportunities of the 21st century, they need fair trade and more open access to growing global markets. How Trade Agreements Benefit Alabama Agriculture As one of the leading states in poultry production, Alabama benefited under the Uruguay Round agreement when Korea eliminated its import quotas on frozen chicken in 1997, and reduced its tariffs to between 18 to 20 percent by 2004. These steps supported a rise in U.S. poultry to 120,000 tons valued at $79 million by 2002. The Philippines opened a tariff-rate quota for poultry meat of 16,701 tons in 1998, which rose to 23,500 tons by 2004.

in Alabama Forest Land Enhancement Program (FLEP)
Alabama has the second largest commercial forest in the nation with three-fourths of the State covered in forests. This natural resource, most of which is owned by private landowners, is important to the people of Alabama. This resource provides wood, products, jobs, recreation, and environmental benefits. It provides homes for an abundance of wildlife, including threatened and endangered species. It also provides filtering mechanisms for the purification and protection of Alabama’s air and water resources. More detailed information on the forest resources of the State can be found in the accompanying State Stewardship Plan. There is significant public interest in encouraging and promoting good stewardship of Alabama’s natural resources. Because private landowners play the primary role in maintaining and enhancing these forestlands, it is extremely important that these landowners are supported in carrying out proper land management when meeting their objectives. The State Stewardship Plan also presents strategies to use to support these landowners. The Forest Land Enhancement Program (FLEP) provides financial, technical, and educational assistance to these landowners. The FLEP program is authorized under the Cooperative Forestry Assistance Act of 1978 as amended by the Farm Security and Rural Investment Act of 2002, and is established to provide additional financial assistance through state foresters to encourage the long-term sustainability of non-industrial private forestlands (NIPF).

    Introduction
The United States Cooperative Extension Service (Extension) was created in 1914 to "aid in diffusing . . . useful and practical information on subjects relating to agriculture and home economics" (Rasmussen, 1989:153). The declining farm and rural population has created a dilemma for Extension. Some clients, agents, and stakeholders argue Extension should maintain its focus on farms and rural America. Most clients, agents, and stakeholders agree that for Extension to survive it must change with the times and broaden its mission (Black, Howe, Howell, & Bedker, 1992; Conone, 1991; Adelaine & Foster, 1990; Johnsrud & Rauschkolb, 1989; Meier, 1989; Hildreth & Armbruster, 1981; Boone & Kincaid, 1966). Extension programs are deeply rooted in agriculture and are, therefore, difficult to change. Extension programs, staff, and volunteers have strong ties to production agriculture, contributing to a slow rate of change.

Soybean rust blankets Alabama, agricultural expert says
Soybean rust [SR] has been spotted in at least 10 counties and threatens next year's [2005] entire crop, according to plant experts tracing its first Alabama invasion. Dr. Ed Sikora, an Auburn University plant pathologist,
said the current soybean crop has been harvested, and growers plan meetings on how to prevent the disease from sweeping into next year's planting.
Dr. Tomm Johnson, who tracks plant diseases for the state Agriculture Department, said the fungus has been spotted in Mobile, Baldwin, Escambia, Monroe, Houston, Cullman, Blount, Tuscaloosa, Perry, and Dallas counties.
He said that wherever good soybean leaf samples were found, SR was present. He expects it will threaten the entire state by spring [2005]. "It blankets Alabama," Johnson said.
It could cost up to USD 35 an acre for fungicides to treat fields to kill SR. Growers will have to decide if it's worth the extra cost when compared to the future price of soybeans, which is not yet available. Underwood hopes a cold winter will kill the fungus, but he expects it will survive in Florida.

John Hunt, an early settler, built a cabin near this site by 1805. The spring became a major attraction at the land sales of 1809, when LeRoy Pope outbid all others. By 1823, spring water was being pumped 96 feet through hollowed cedar logs to a reservoir on the town square. This was one of the earliest waterworks in the country. Reverse The Big Spring
(continued from other side) In 1843, LeRoy Pope’s son, William H. Pope, deeded the site to Huntsville for one dollar. Until 1957, the spring was the main source of fresh water for Huntsville’s citizens, and for thirty years prior to 1950, revenue from the sale of water was the largest single source of income for the city’s General Fund. A park/picnic ground was developed around the spring in 1898. Before that and for many years afterward, great crowds attended religious baptisms held below the small dam at the spring.
