  • Wetter climate conditions could increase productivity of hardwoods, such as oaks and maples, at the expense of pines and other softwoods, and may increase the risk of forest pests such as southern pine bark beetle. If the drier climate scenario were to play out, savannas and grasslands would expand at the expense of forests, particularly further inland from the Gulf Coast. Increased fire frequency in drier conditions would require significant adaptations in forest and fire management. More fires mean changes in species selection, stand density, fertilization practices, and rotation lengths. Extreme, long-lasting droughts would seriously damage forests in the long-term. With carbon dioxide fertilization, tree growth increases if water is not limited. As temperature increases further, however, the capacity of trees to absorb and store carbon diminishes.
Climate change would also affect Alabama's agriculture industry. For example:

by Harry Baumes Hurricane Ivan made landfall Thursday morning in Alabama. The destructive winds and rainfall that Ivan brings ashore has potential to destroy physical property, as well as take human life. The latest projected path of Ivan as reported this morning (11.00 am EST) is basically along a line from the southwest corner of Alabama to the northeast corner, and then into central/eastern Tennessee. Alabama's agriculture sector ranked 12th in terms of net farm income in 2003, with a total of $1.6 billion, and 31st in terms of value of production. Farm and farm-related jobs account for about 26% of the state employment (2002, USDA, Economic Research Service). Tennessee ranks 34th in terms of net farm income and 36th in terms of value of production. Farm and farm-related jobs account for about 24% of the total jobs. Clearly, the farm sector is vital to these states. Alabama accounts for about 12% of U.S. peanut production and broiler cash receipts, ranking 3rd among all states. Ivan came ashore in Alabama's second-leading peanut-producing county for 2003, Baldwin County, and close to Escambia County (7% of 2003 production). Its projected path could put another 10% of production at direct risk. The bulk of Alabama's peanut production is in the southeast corner of the state. Rains and secondary tornados could damage the crop in those areas as well. About 3% of the state's peanut crop was harvested as of September 12. If fields are too wet for farmers to move equipment in to dig nut, pest pressures will rise on the mature crop, putting production at risk. Those counties at risk account for some 30% of production. If 30–35% of Alabama's 2004 peanut production is lost, then U.S. production will be reduced by about 4%. Peanut prices would likely show some upward pressure.

alabama Cooperative Extension 1998. alabama Agricultural Statistics 199601997 Bulletin. alabama Agricultural Statistics Service, Montgomery, AL. 92pp.
http://www.ghcc.msfc.nasa.gov/regional/agriculture.html
Assessment Approach The agricultural assessment will involve computer simulations of the impacts of climate scenarios: historical (with and without extreme events) and GCM-driven estimates for 2030 and 2100 on major field crops (soybean, corn, peanut, and wheat) in the Southeast. These results will be refined by spatially aggregating them using Monte Carlo and sampling techniques. These analyses will be expanded further to other economically-important crops (cotton, sugarcane, Florida citrus and tomato yields) using a combination of crop simulation and analogous years. Using the resulting changes in expected yield, changes in gross farm income (economic impacts) will be estimated under various climate regimes. The vulnerability of the agricultural sector to extreme climate events (hurricanes and frost) will also be assessed. Data sources used for model assessment and economic analysis can be found at two major US Department of Agriculture websites. The National Agricultural Statistics Service includes the Census of Agriculture data and other state- and county level crops data ( http://www.usda.gov/nass/

Chapter 2
ALABAMA
  • The vast amounts of chicken manure applied as fertilizer in Alabama's biggest poultry-growing counties pose a contamination threat to groundwater and potentially to drinking water.
  • Citizens have no opportunity to voice concerns about the environmental impact of new animal factories under Alabama's draft permit system now being considered.
For the past 20 years, Alabama has been faced with the problems of a growing poultry industry, including the potential contamination of the state's water from chicken manure applied too generously to farmland. Now other types of factory feedlots are moving into the state. According to the Alabama Department of Environmental Management (ADEM), Alabama has approximately 220 swine facilities, 248 dairies, about 3,445 broiler chicken facilities and 33,000 beef cattle farms. ADEM does not know how many of these facilities have 1,000 animal units or more.
Pollution Problems
Alabama is one of the leading poultry-producing states in the nation. The state's poultry production is geographically concentrated in the Sand Mountain region of northern Alabama, resulting in a large quantity of poultry litter spread in a few places.
