Introduction Ghana , nation in West Africa, a former British colony known as the Gold Coast until 1957. That year Ghana became the first state in sub-Saharan Africa to gain political independence from European colonial rule. Drawing on tradition, the new state took its name from that of the medieval empire of Ghana, on the upper Niger River, several hundred miles to the northwest of modern Ghana. Following independence, Ghana assumed the leadership role in the African continent’s struggle for national liberation. The people of this densely populated country belong to more than 100 different ethnic groups, but Ghana has largely been spared the ethnic conflict that has torn apart many other African countries. The capital city of Accra is the largest city in the country. English is the official language of the country, but most Ghanaians also speak at least one African language. Ghana has one of the strongest economies in West Africa, yet the country’s economic base continues to be agriculture and the people remain poor. Gold mining, the production of cacao (used to make chocolate), and tourism are the main sources of revenue.

Egypt of Muhammad 'Ali
Not only commercial interests but France's conflict with England led the Directory to send Napoleon Bonaparte to Egypt in 1798. The general had been warned by the traveler Volney that if the French invaded Egypt, they would find themselves at war with the British, the Ottoman empire, and the Muslims. Napoleon gathered a force of 36,000 veterans and hundreds of civilian experts in 400 ships, which reached Alexandria just after Nelson's British fleet had left there. On July 2, 1798 a French army quickly stormed Alexandria and read Bonaparte's proclamation that he respected Islam, that he had destroyed the Pope and the bigoted Knights of Malta, and that they had come only to terminate the tyranny of the Mamluks. Murad Bey persuaded Ibrahim and Sa'id Abu Bekir Pasha that they should resist the French invasion; but in the battle by the pyramids the French killed about 2,000 Egyptians while only losing ten of their men. Murad fled south up the Nile to Upper Egypt, while Ibrahim and the Pasha deserted Cairo for Palestine. On the first of August, Nelson's squadron returned and destroyed the French fleet at Abuqir, leaving ships to blockade the harbor. Although Napoleon claimed to be acting on behalf of the Ottoman empire, the French did not even have an ambassador in Istanbul. The British had Spencer Smith there, and he formed a coalition with the Ottomans and Russia. On September 11 Sultan Selim III (r. 1789-1807) declared war on France.

Introduction

Ghana Plants and Animal Back to Top The main industrial crops are palm oil, cotton, rubber, sugar cane, tobacco, and kenaf, the latter used in the production of fiber bags. None is of strategic economic importance, and all, apart from oil palms, have suffered as a result of the nation's economic difficulties. contempt claims that such crops could assist local industrialization efforts, the government has not focused the same attention on this area as on export crops. For example, sugar cane output has diminished with the closure of the nation's two sugar mills, which produced 237,000 tons per year in 1974-76, but only 110,000 tons in 1989. Farm animal production is severely limited by the incidence of tsetse fly in Ghana's forested regions and by poor grazing vegetation elsewhere. It is of major importance only in the comparatively arid north and has not been earmarked for special treatment in Ghana's recovery program. In 1989 there were an around 1.2 million cattle, 2.2 million sheep, 2 million goats, 550,000 pigs, and 8 million chickens in Ghana. Ghana Communications Back to Top

    An Akan Queen Speaks
Indigenous Aftican Extended Clan Culture Holds Wisdom for the World
By Nana Apeadu Family in the Ghanaian context is not what today is called "nuclear," consisting of husband, wife and children. It is not even the extended variety, with wife and children, grandparents, uncles and cousins. The family goes deeper than these. The Akan family is an unbroken clan that includes not only the living, but the dead and the unborn. This paper is written from the point of view of an Akuapem, part of a larger group called the Akan who make up 65% of the people of Ghana. The Akan belief is that God is our creator. Man is made up of soul (okra), spirit (sunsum), blood (mogya) and family (abusua). Every Akan belongs to a clan and is bound to that clan by blood relation. This family setup is the basis of the entire social organization of the Akans. The Akan society is organized around the family or, more appropriately, the clan, which is based on the lineage system. Akan society is composed of three systems: matrilineal, patrilineal and double descent, the latter meaning descendance from both the mother's and the father's sides. The society is structured around eight clans. The family, abusua, is that unbroken clan which includes the living, the dead and the unborn. The lineage system provides the fundamental codes of life for the Akan, the skeleton of the social structure, the framework that shapes the body politics and guards inheritance, marriage and land tenure. It is also perceived as key in matters relating to troubles, including debt, arrest by police, help in school fees, or finding jobs.1
