Working in a Balanced Environment Look around Truax Air Park. Notice the inviting open green space, wooded sites, and attractive architectural style. The Park is the realization of a carefully drawn site plan aimed at balancing the needs of business with natural beauty of the area. Protective covenants govern Truax Air Park development; providing architectural review and guidance during project planning and construction. These covenants outline specific standards for architectural control, parking, and landscaping that assure only high quality development throughout the Park. While Truax Air Park West has already attracted many major tenants, several attractive sites remain. Each site is designed to make the best use of existing space and natural terrain. Prime professional office develpment is planned for some lots. Other lots offer maximum flexibility, parcels that are unplatted and available for a variety of uses including prime professional office, light manufacturing, warehousing, and commercial.

Aspen
World Facts Index United States When Walter Paepcke and Friedl Pfeifer wandered into Aspen in the mid-1940s, the town was barely more than a green patch on a map. The boom of mining was a distant echo, and what was left of the early town had become a sleepy agricultural and ranching community. That quickly changed when Pfeifer, a veteran of the military ski unit, 10th Mountain Division, transformed the face of Aspen Mountain (Ajax) into a world-class ski area. In the meantime, Paepcke was conjuring the 'Aspen Idea,' a utopic vision that would create a setting for high culture in the Rocky Mountains. A place where great thinkers could congregate, rejuvenate and trade ideas like baseball cards. Paepcke, however, only saw the beginnings of his ambitions take shape (he passed away in the early 1960s). But under Pfeifers watchful eye, Aspen has become a celebrated, albeit quirky, resort town with a brain. The rich and famous see Aspen as a playground. They flock to the resort, and multitudes of star struck tourists fly in behind them hoping to catch a quick glimpse of a celebrity. But if you can't wait and are dying to see someone famous, just head up Ajax Mountain and check out the shrines to Jerry Garcia, Elvis, and Marilyn Monroe. If you cannot find the shrines, just look towards Red Mountain (south) and you can see where all of the celebrities live. Mammoth mansions litter the mountainside, many which sit empty a good portion of the year and are probably as large as the town of Aspen itself. Perhaps the most famous spread is the Peak House, which sits near the summit of Red Mountain. The house sprawls some 23,000 feet and is worth a tidy $27 million. But if you would rather just rent the place for a month, it will set you back $200,000. One night will only cost you $17,500.

AIRPORTS

By J.G. Ballard [The Observer 14/9/97] Airports and airfields have always held a special magic, gateways to the infinite possibilities that only the sky can offer. In 1946, when I first came to England, a dark and derelict shell of a country, I used to dream of the runways of Wake Island and Midway, stepping stones that would carry me back across the Pacific to the China of my childhood. At school in Cambridge, and later as a medical student at King's college, I would flee all that fossilised Gothic self-immersion and ride a borrowed motorcycle to the American airbases at Mildenhall and Lakenheath, happy to stare through the wire at the lines of silver bombers and transport planes. Airports then were places where America arrived to greet us, where the world of tomorrow touched down in Europe. Sadly, Britain faltered on the way to its own future, half-heartedly erecting a shabby urban limbo of under-serviced municipal towers and wind-swept shopping precincts. Together they provided the nostalgia- worshippers with all the ammunition needed to launch their postmodernist counter-attack. The pitched roof seemed to rule the Eighties, a vernacular dialect unable to distinguish a town hall from a supermarket or fire station, too many temples to tweeness that resemble offerings on the altar of Prince Charles's uneasy conscience.

VAF welcomes you to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania from May 12-16, 2004 to explore the theme "Architecture and Landscapes of the Pennsylvania Germans, 1720-1920."
We hope that these tours will provide provocative grist for discussion. Just what does "Pennsylvania German" mean? What has it meant in the past? How did "Germans in Pennsylvania" evolve into "Pennsylvania Germans," and how is that socially-constructed concept called "ethnicity" expressed in the landscape? How did Germans in Pennsylvania rub shoulders with people from all over the world, and how did these peoples together encounter – and shape modernity?
The conference organizer is Sally McMurry at Penn State University

Flash city
The world's most renowned architects are flocking to Shanghai, where they are building the world's biggest skyscrapers and hotels, futuristic model towns, theme cities and numerous other never-seen-before projects. All the innovative puts this Chinese city in the vanguard for style, ambition and experimentation. Once again.
By Ron Gluckman /Shanghai "I T'S GIGANTIC, LIKE A BIG THRILL," says Johannes Dell, hands twisting as if trying to wring the right adjectives from the air. Silently reflective for a few seconds, he finally adds: "It's like paragliding, which I do. It's that same feeling, like jumping off a cliff." Dell, from Frankfurt, isn't describing an action sport, but his occupation, surprising since he is an architect, stereotypically a straight-laced field defined by sharp lines and well-tested designs. Perhaps elsewhere, but Dell sits in his office in Shanghai, 22 floors high, affording dazzling views of a cityscape crackling with energy. In every direction, enormous cranes flank forests of fast-rising skyscrapers, while swarms of cars zip on spaghetti strands of spanking-new elevated motorways encircling them.

Historic Frank Lloyd Wright Design Could be Turned into Inn
It was more than 50 years ago that Frank Lloyd Wright designed a farmhouse in far west suburban Plato Township for Robert Muirhead and his family.
Now, the farm is becoming a forest preserve. And the farmhouse, still owned by the Muirhead family, is being converted into a bed-and-breakfast.
"This will truly be a national bed and breakfast destination," Mark VanKerhoff, Kane County building and community services director, told members of the county board's development committee Tuesday.
Many buildings that claim direct lineage to the great architect actually were done by students, but this was done by Wright himself.
Owners need the zoning change to make the house a residence again. Because it was an owner-occupied building on a farm, it sat on regular farm zoning.
But now it will be classified as rural residential and needs the zoning change for that classification. It also will get a special use permit for a bed-and-breakfast.
It's been more than 50 years since Frank Lloyd Wright designed a farmhouse on Rohrsen Road in Plato Township.
