One of America's oldest and most important cities, Boston embraces its role as the "Cradle of American Independence." The well-marked Freedom Trail offers a fascinating walking tour of American history from the home of Paul Revere to historic Faneuil Hall Marketplace, a landmark collection of restored buildings. Boston is a beautiful city, too, with impressive public spaces and tangled, tree-lined streets. Several well-preserved historic areas span America's architectural landscape from the intimate, federal-style townhomes of Beacon Hill to the urban Victorian neighborhoods of the Back Bay. As the economic and cultural hub of New England, Boston is also a thoroughly modern city, with a thriving arts community, world-class museums, vibrant theater, upscale shopping, and many fantastic restaurants.
Nearby Cambridge, located just across the Charles River, offers another world of sites, restaurants, and eclectic shops to explore. Harvard Square, the nexus of Cambridge and Harvard, has long been a haven of Bohemian counter-culture and a popular tourist stop. Thousands of college students and young professionals lend the city a youthful, energetic appeal, helping it shed its reputation as a conservative town. Featuring in two hit television shows, Ally McBeal and The Practice, Boston has become a hip city!

Airport facilities in Washington, D.C. had long been seriously inadequate early in the 20th Century. Hoover Field, located near the present site of the Pentagon, was the first major terminal to be developed in the Capital area, opening its doors in 1926. The following year, Washington Airport, another privately operated field, began service next door. In 1930, the economics of the Great Depression caused the two terminals to merge to form Washington-Hoover Airport. Bordered on the east by Highway One, with its accompanying high-tension electrical wires, and obstructed by a high smokestack on one approach and a dump nearby, the field was less than adequate. Incredibly, the airport's one runway was intersected by a busy vehicular street, Military Road, which had guards posted to flag down traffic during takeoffs and landings. The Beginning: Between 1926 and 1938, Congress produced reams of debate transcripts and 37 committee reports on the need for a new airport, but no action was taken. In the Fall of 1938, President Franklin D. Roosevelt announced at a press conference that he was "tired of waiting for Congress" to select a site for the new airport, and said that it would be built on mudflats on a bend of the Potomac River at Gravelly Point, 4 ½ miles south of Washington, D.C. Two months later, on November 21, 1938, the first ceremonial shovelful of dirt was moved to signal the start of construction.

Computer glitch causes havoc at Northeast airports
Published: January 6, 2000, 9:55 AM PST By Joe Wilcox
Staff Writer, CNET News.com
TrackBack Print E-mail TalkBack A computer problem grounded planes in the Northeast this morning, potentially snarling air traffic for the remainder of the day. A Federal Aviation Administration representative said the problem does not appear to be related to the Y2K computer bug. The problem occurred about 6:15 a.m. EST at Washington Center in Leesburg, Va., which handles much of the air traffic for the Northeast. The problem was related to communications between the main computer at Washington Center and an unidentified peripheral device. As error messages mounted, they overloaded the main computer, forcing the operations center to shift to a backup system. The FAA temporarily grounded planes at all airports in Boston; New York; Philadelphia; Pittsburgh; metropolitan Washington, D.C.; Teterboro, N.J.; and Raleigh-Durham, N.C.
