Local Information: El Paso Central El Paso
Central El Paso forms the heart of the city, containing historic neighborhoods and architectural gems, as well as a street grid that makes neighborhood and freeway access convenient. It's no more than 20 minutes to any part of town.
The area is diverse, including the city's earliest suburban development as well as its urban core, Downtown. This area offers a diverse selection of residential living arrangements; thus the neighborhoods themselves are also very diverse.
The Kern Place neighborhood, near the University of Texas at El Paso, boasts fine architecture and parks, galleries and restaurants. Downtown is the gateway to Juarez. The area includes the Arts Festival Plaza, City of El Paso Museum of Art and the El Paso Judson F. Williams Convention Center. The area also includes Sunset Heights, also near UTEP, and Scenic Drive, which overlooks Downtown El Paso and Juarez. The central El Paso area also encompasses parts of Fort Bliss and two major highways, the Patriot Freeway (north/south) and Interstate 10 (east/west). Near Fort Bliss, portions of Dyer and some off streets boast excellent Thai, Korean, Chinese and other world-wide cooking styles.
Other Central activities include the El Paso Zoo, the El Paso Coliseum, Western Playland Amusement Park and Ascarate Park.

Calama
On a high northeast plateau northeast of Atofagasta, Calama is more of a business center than a tourist destination. Still, it is a popular stopover for visitors headed to the oasis of San Pedro de Atacama and the geysers at El Tatio.
Colonial villages like Chiu Chiu and archaeological monuments like the Pukara de Lasana, a pre-Columbian fortress, are within easy driving distance of Calama. The improved highway to San Pedro has made it possible to visit El Tatio and return via villages like Caspana, Ayquina and Chiu Chiu in one long day. For some, the world's largest open-pit mine in neigboring Chuquicamata is also an attraction. Codelco, the state-run copper mining enterprise, offers tours of its facilities, including the awesome open-pit, every weekday morning.

The Atherton House is located on the northeast corner of California and Octavia at 1990 California Street. It was built in 1881 by Gertrude Athertons (1857-1948) mother-in-law Dominga de Goni Atherton after her husband's death. Gertrudes mother-in-law domineered her son George's marrying the henpecking Gertrude Atherton. Some poeple think this mansion is haunted.

    http://www.edwebproject.org/altiplano/cusco2.html
Inca masonry, Sacsayhuaman Today we had a free day in Cusco. Our primary goal was to visit Sacsayhuaman, the magnificent Inca temple fortress high above the city. As the first Incas expanded Cusco they envisioned their capital being in the shape of a puma, the South American mountain lion they held in high reverence. Cusco itself served as the puma's body while the fortress of Sacsayhuaman formed the lion's head, its neck a stone highway leading down to the center of town. After breakfast we walked northeast from the Plaza de Armas along Calle Suecia. The cobblestone road rose slowly - certainly less steeply than your average San Francisco hill - yet we quickly felt the effects of the altitude. About five minutes into the walk we reached a pedestrian stairway known as Calle Rebalosa. We had to pause every 20 steps or so in order to catch our breath but the picturesque views down the stairs and across the hillside gave us ample excuses to pause. Rebalosa terminated at the Iglesia de San Cristobal, a pretty church with a vast courtyard. Yesterday we had driven by the church on our way to the sacred valley and there had been several Quechua campesinas posing with their llamas for photographs. Today the plaza was deserted save a young boy playing a solitary game of soccer with an empty plastic water bottle. After saying goodbye to the kids and their llamas we entered the main fortification of Sacsayhuaman. Even though the Spanish dismantled the majority of the fort in order to use the stones for new construction in town, the remains of Sacsayhuaman are still a magnificent testament to Inca engineering and ingenuity. The temple fortress is comprised of three tiers of 22 zigzagging ramparts. Strategically it's an excellent defensive design, taking advantage of pointed ramparts in the same way that their European counterparts used star-shaped forts in order to repel cannon fire. It's hard to comprehend what Sacsayhuaman would have looked like in its prime 500 years ago: three great towers once stood over the 22 ramparts while as many as 5000 Quechua warriors called the citadel home.
