September 03 - 17, 2005 Mark Powell The Carpathian Mountains are a marvellous setting for the painted wooden churches and frescoed monasteries of northern Romania. Our journey takes us north-east from Bucharest through a beautiful area of fortified churches and peasant stockades in Transylvania to Marmures. Here we will see tall-spired wooden churches and folk-inspired paintings, including work by Lapus, Rogoz, Plopis and Bogdan Voda. We then head to the Bukovina region, where the most outstanding frescoed monasteries and churches are located – such as Voronet, Arbore, Humor, Moldovita and Sucevita. As well as scrutinising these magnificent survivals of the 15th and 16th centuries, we will focus our attention on another aspect of Romania closely related to the painted churches: the wonderful folk-art traditions that continue to thrive throughout the countryside. Our tour begins with a visit to the Bucharest Village Museum to examine the vivid carving, decorative painting, pottery and embroidery that are widely recognised as masterpieces of folk art. In order to see as much as possible of Romania’s scattered heritage without retracing our route, we change hotels regularly. Hotels vary in quality and some in rural areas are quite modest. All rooms have private facilities.

Video Systems Raising the roof Robert Cashill May 1, 1999 12:00 PM E-mail this article When Kai Tak Airport was operational, the hair-raising highlight of a trip to Hong Kong was often the arrival. A test of mettle for pilots and passengers alike, Kai Tak was a sliver of space narrowly tucked in between the skyscrapers and housing projects of one of the world's most densely populated urban areas. The airport itself, never more than drably functional, was distinctly overshadowed by the navigational feats involved in landing there. With a transfer of leadership to China scheduled for 1997, British and Hong Kong authorities decided in 1989 to construct a brand-new airport that would commemorate the achievements of the past and serve as a beacon toward the future. Thus began one of the most grandiose public works projects in history, one with enough scope to fill an entire series of Arthur Hailey novels. With Hong Kong itself too small to contain 6 million sq. ft. (550,000 sq. m) of planned airport space, the project commenced with the leveling of the island of Chek Lap Kok, and the reclamation of much additional land from the seas off Lantau Island, 15 miles (25km) west of Hong Kong Island. Early last July, Kai Tak was shuttered, and within hours of its closing, Hong Kong International Airport was welcoming the first of what are expected to be 35 million passengers per year to the gateway to China.

Denver
World Facts Index United States Denver is a geographically isolated city sitting exactly one mile above sea level and over 600 lonely miles from the closest major city. Concealed from the west by bold foothills and towering 14,000-foot peaks, protected to the east by an expansive and unforgiving high desert terrain, it is a place where everybody seems to be from somewhere else. Today, modern-day pioneers flock to Denver for world-class skiing and biking, serene hiking, and intense rock climbing. They travel here from far and wide to imbibe famous microbrews, stand in the humbling presence of massive peaks, or find prosperity in a booming computer and telecommunications economy. The end result: blended but cohesive neighborhoods, brimming with a diverse collection of cultures and exuding character and charm. Downtown/Auraria Anchored by Civic Center Park and the 16th Street Mall, a mile-long, tree-lined pedestrian promenade, downtown is the perfect place to begin exploring the Mile High City. Downtown's vital mix of government, entertainment, business, and sport make Denver's central business district the envy of the West. Take a tour of the Colorado State Capitol Building, where the eighteenth step places you exactly one mile above sea level, or stroll through the nation's best collection of Native American materials at the Denver Art Museum. Shop away at the Denver Pavilions and Tabor Center or take in a Broadway show at one of the eight theaters comprising the Denver Performing Arts Complex. Spend a day wandering the shores of Colorado's Ocean Journey or seek adventure at Six Flags Elitch Gardens. After a long day of sightseeing, kickback in a brewpub and enjoy a microbrew, or treat yourself to a fine dining experience at one of downtown's excellent restaurants.

Holding on to History

An Historic Landmark of the Nation's Capital Serving the People Who Make History for More than 60 Years... Almost from the beginning of the English Colonial History of this continent, the crest of the National Airport site has been rich in historic significance. The Gravelly Point site has significance dating back to colonial days. Captain John Alexander built a mansion called "Abingdon" on the site in 1746. A descendent, Philip Alexander, donated most of the land on which the City of Alexandria was built, and it was so named in his honor. The mansion was purchased in 1778 by John Parke Custis, and was the birthplace of Eleanor "Nelly" Parke Custis, stepdaughter of President George Washington. Abingdon was destroyed by fire in 1930 and the ruins stabilized until 1998 when the Airports Authority preserved the site and housed artifacts found there in the Exhibit Hall, located in Terminal A. Airport facilities in Washington, D.C. had long been seriously inadequate early in the 20th Century. Hoover Field, located near the present site of the Pentagon, was the first major terminal to be developed in the Capital area, opening its doors in 1926. The following year, Washington Airport, another privately operated field, began service next door. In 1930, the economics of the Great Depression caused the two terminals to merge to form Washington-Hoover Airport. Bordered on the east by Highway One, with its accompanying high-tension electrical wires, and obstructed by a high smokestack on one approach and a dump nearby, the field was less than adequate. Incredibly, the airport's one runway was intersected by a busy vehicular street, Military Road, which had guards posted to flag down traffic during takeoffs and landings.

Five years later, in 1955, the 587 by 17-foot south finger was added increasing the square footage by 9,979 square feet and also providing badly needed aircraft gates and loading positions. In the intervening years more space for passengers and aircraft became necessary. In October 1958, the North Terminal was opened, adding an additional 7,264 square feet of usable space. In 1961, the 772-foot long passageway between the Main and the North Terminals was enclosed.
