Petoskey, Michigan
Equipment:
Changes of clothes, camera
Time: 10 hours driving from Indianapolis, Indiana, 3-4 days there, 10 hours back
Cost: $Very little but for souvenirs/ferry fare What does it mean to be approached by a man with his right hand held out in high-five position, the other hand pointing to the tip of his ring finger? What if he starts spewing unintelligible, non-English sounding words to explain the hand gesture? What if this slew of babble was in response to the question "Where are you from?" Midwesterners know at the first hand gesture. The state of Michigan is shaped, sort of, like a mittened hand . This peculiarity enables Michiganites to describe Michigan geography in a particularly visual way; as for the non-English explanation, it's not English - many of Michigan's towns and cities are named in native tongue. In the example above, if the right hand is Michigan, the tip of the ring finger is extreme NW Michigan. More specifically, it's Petoskey, MI. Population: less than 7,000. Murder rate: close to zero. Density of tiny, cutesy shops and villas and olde tyme country home style cabin lodges: approaching capacity. Site of: a very unlikely road trip. It was kind of a last minute thing, but I drove from Evansville, Indiana, right on the southern tip, to Indianapolis, Indiana, right in the center of the state, one summer day to meet two friends with whom I would spend the next 10-plus hours in the car. My blurry recollection of the trip suggests the three of us sang along to Charlie Daniel's 'Devil Went Down to Georgia' at least eight thousand times, I somehow wrangled my way into riding shotgun for the entire trip, and there are very, very few things to see between Indianapolis and the state border.

Remarks by Michael Powers, CEO.
As our first half-century reflects, SMMA has always thrived on change and innovation.
The Early Years
The firm's original design commissions included distribution, light manufacturing, and airfreight facility projects at Logan Airport, a flight kitchen for United Airlines, and an office building for Northeast Airlines. The company's "spirits" were lifted with distribution facilities for the liquor industry, including Seagrams. The Towns of Framingham and Lexington MA, and West Hartford CT awarded the firm projects that established our early reputation as designers of municipal ice-skating arenas.
The Growth Years
SMMA grew from 30 to 90 people. Larger and more diverse design commissions included the new Burlington Mall off Route 128 (as associated architects and engineers) and work for First National Bank of Boston at Columbia Circle that led to over 100,000sf of new and renovated space for offices, data processing, dining, and recreation. In the early 1970s, we began the first of over 60 projects with L.L. Bean, starting with a distribution center and then involving new stores and additions in Freeport, ME. During the 1970s and early 1980s, the Route 128 Technology Belt expansion around Boston saw SMMA serve rapidly-growing, regional high tech clients - Digital, Wang, Raytheon, Analog Devices, Lockheed Sanders, Dupont/New England Nuclear, New England Telephone - as well as RCA, a national client. This same period brought new commissions for the design of a number of significant suburban office buildings. These included the Lexington Corporate Center in Lexington, MA for Boston Properties; Reservoir Place, a 535,000 sf aluminum-clad office building in Waltham, MA (known along Route 128 as the "silver streak"); offices and a data center for UNUM in Portland, ME; and the original BayBank Tower in Burlington, MA.

St. Petersburg area was discovered and explored by Panfilo de Narvaez in 1528, 36 years after Columbus arrived in the Caribbean and 37 years before the founding of St. Augustine. Narvaez and 400 soldiers, probably the first Europeans in this area, came looking for gold and silver. Instead they found the Tocobagan Indians, an agricultural tribe that had occupied the peninsula for hundreds of years. The Spanish ransacked their huts, and pillaged their ceremonial mounds, but found no treasure. Fierce battles ensued and the Indians never forgot the white man's atrocities.
In 1875, General John Williams came down from Detroit and bought 2,500 acres of land on Tampa Bay. He envisioned a grand city with graceful parks and broad streets, the trademark of today’s St. Petersburg. Thirteen years later, Peter Demens, a noble Russian aristocrat, brought the Orange Belt Railway to St. Petersburg. On June 8, 1888 the first train arrived. It was Demens who named the city after his birthplace, St. Petersburg, Russia. In 1914 the rich history of spring training and Florida’s love affair with baseball began when the city’s former mayor, Al Lang, convinced Branch Rickey to move his St. Louis Browns to the Sunshine City for spring training.
The boom years in the 1920s brought notable architecture to St. Petersburg. The city’s architecture reflected a Mediterranean theme, however during the Depression, the real estate boom crashed. The city recovered during the 1940s, when it witnessed large growth because of World War II. It was home to the U.S. Coast Guard Station on Bayboro Harbor, a training base for troops plus The War Department later selected St. Petersburg as a major technical services training center for the Army Air Corps. After the war, many of the military men stationed here returned to live or visit as tourists. In the 1950s the population reached beyond 200,000. Today, St. Petersburg continues to lead the region in conservation and cultural affairs.

Architect(s): Carpenter Sellers Associates
Address: 104 Water St.
Year: unkown
This 14,000 square-foot switch office for Sprint is located within the City of Henderson's Redevelopment Corridor. The building reflects design ideas that reinforce the City's desire for a more pedestrian friendly and quaint atmosphere. Decorative canopies are on the building's street side even though no windows are on that façade. The canopies provide shade for pedestrians, reduce the scale of the building, and add visual interest. Sandstone, metal, stucco, and other types of stone were used to create an attractive and colorful façade, helping to set the tone for future development.
