Reagan National Airport by A Porter 29 June 2005 This airport was quite efficient. I flew to and from Terminal A on Northwest. Prices at the Terminal A store were surprisingly only a bit above average non-airport prices. The airport was also rather calm, and Terminal A has interesting architecture. The only downside was that I had to meet a group in Terminal B, which is also where my tour bus dropped me off on my return flight. To get from Terminal B from Terminal A, I had to walk down a very long, narrow, and hardly occupied hallway enclosed with glass. This made it very hot, especially carrying a 50lb bag. Plus it was November, 30 degrees in Minneapolis, and 80 degrees in Washington. Reagan National Airport by Ross Tomkin 3 January 2005 It's clean, relatively quiet, new (except for the ancient Terminal A, 8 or 9 gates that will soon be remodeled), and convenient to downtown and the rest of the city. It offers an excellent alternative to dragging all the way out to IAD (Dulles) or the worst, BWI (Balitmore Washington). US Airways is the dominant carrier at DCA, taking up all of the North Pier and a few gates in the Central Pier, but other carriers are plentiful as well - Delta also has a large presence. DCA has four separate security checkpoints, allowing quick access to gates, large windows for great plane-viewing, and a general feeling of modernity and ease.

The village of Greenport sits at the northern tip of the North Fork of Long Island, a good three-hour drive from Manhattan. Once a bustling whaling port, Greenport today is considerably quieter, with a part-time mayor and none of the social cachet of the Hamptons. As the locals say, on the South Fork they call it sushi, on the North Fork we call it bait.

It's not the sort of place you'd expect to find a notable project by one of New York's most promising young architecture firms, Sharples Holden Pasquarelli. As part of its $13 million redevelopment of the town's waterfront, SHoP, as the firm is known, is building a camera obscura. Latin for "dark room," the centuries-old invention is essentially a viewing chamber that gives people inside a 360-degree panorama of what's happening outside.

1999 Honor Awards for Washington Architecture
Journal staff Five public projects and two private residences were recognized for design excellence in the AIA Seattle 1999 Honor Awards for Washington Architecture, sponsored by the American Institute of Architects, Seattle Chapter. The awards were announced at Benaroya Hall on Monday evening, Nov. 15, to an audience of nearly 1,000, the largest crowd ever gathered for the 48-year-old program. Seattle Mayor Paul Schell, an honorary member of the AIA, presided over the event and moderated the panel of jurors as they discussed the state of architecture in Washington. The international jury included Eva Jiricna, born in Czechoslovakia and presently the head of a globe-spanning London-based practice; Fumihiko Maki of Tokyo, among the world's most revered architects; and Rafael Vignoly, a native of Uruguay now practicing around the world from his New York headquarters. Included in this year's program was a response to a challenge issued by Schell at the 1997 Honor Awards program: "I'd like to see [a program] that will help architects, and all of us, rise to the challenge of designing our nation's Pacific gateway." Architect Peter Bohlin review-ed Pacific gateway entries in the 1999 owners program, and announced his selections Nov. 8 at On the Boards Theater. His selections included completed projects that responded specifically to the Pacific gateway theme as well as unbuilt and conceptual projects.

Yale School of Architecture Announces Spring Semester Events
New Haven, Conn. A symposium on city ports, a multi-media exhibition of large-scale environment-friendly architecture and a weekly lecture series featuring some of the world's most celebrated architects, designers and planners are among the free and public offerings at the Yale School of Architecture (YSA) this term. Following its critically acclaimed retrospective of the work of photographer and architect Robert Damora, the YSA Gallery will host an exhibition on "green" architecture. Titled "Big and Green: Toward Sustainable Architecture in the 21st Century," the exhibition will focus on 50 large buildings and structures worldwide that exemplify advances in sustainable architecture. "Big and Green" will be at the Yale School of Architecture February 17 - May 7. The impetus to make energy-conserving buildings that are safe for the health of occupants and friendly to the environment grew out of the "earth consciousness" movement of the late 1960s and 1970s. Recognizing the scarcity of non-renewable energy resources particularly fossil fuels and becoming aware of the hazards posed by many of the most common building materials, architects began to explore ways to apply "green" principles to small-scale structures like single-family homes. Recently designers and engineers have set their sights higher. Large apartment complexes, sports arenas, skyscrapers and factories are among the projects that have benefited from environmental innovations in the building industry. New standards to measure "sustainability" have also been developed.
