St. Croix is one of the U.S. Virgin Islands, which are considered an unincorporated U.S. territory. The beautiful island of St. Croix is the largest of the 3 inhabited US Virgins Islands (St. Thomas and St. John are the other two) and is 84 square miles. However, it only has a population of 55,000 residents. Christopher Columbus is said to have discovered the island in 1493, landing at Salt River on the north coast. The eastern part of the island is more arid than the western end of the island. You will even see large cactus plants on the east end. The east end has many beautiful sunny beaches and is favored by the more wealthy of the island. The western half of St. Croix is quite different. It is verdant and lush, with beautiful green hills, a small rainforest, and wonderful white sandy beaches. Tourism is a growing and thriving part of life on St. Croix and tourists just love it! The two main towns are Christiansted and Frederiksted . Christiansted is on the northeast part of the island and is filled with historic Danish architecture. Frederiksted has charming "gingerbread" Victorian architecture. Fort Frederik dates back to 1700 and is the site where Governor General Peter Van Scholten read the proclamation abolishing slavery in 1848. Today it houses a museum. Frederiksted has a colorful harbor that draws cruise ships and people from around the world.

In addition to airport design, LPA's architects offer creative designs for educational facilities, manufacturing plants, office buildings, and facilities for state and federal agencies. Creative and effective use of space, aesthetic consideration, community identity, and value for the construction dollar are primary concerns of the architects at LPA as they prepare designs for both the public and private sector. From the rehabilitation of existing facilities to the design of completely new terminal structures, LPA architects assist clients in the evaluation of their current facilities and future development needs. An Historic Landmark of the Nation's Capital Serving the People Who Make History for More than 60 Years... Almost from the beginning of the English Colonial History of this continent, the crest of the National Airport site has been rich in historic significance. The Gravelly Point site has significance dating back to colonial days. Captain John Alexander built a mansion called "Abingdon" on the site in 1746. A descendent, Philip Alexander, donated most of the land on which the City of Alexandria was built, and it was so named in his honor. The mansion was purchased in 1778 by John Parke Custis, and was the birthplace of Eleanor "Nelly" Parke Custis, stepdaughter of President George Washington. Abingdon was destroyed by fire in 1930 and the ruins stabilized until 1998 when the Airports Authority preserved the site and housed artifacts found there in the Exhibit Hall, located in Terminal A. Airport facilities in Washington, D.C. had long been seriously inadequate early in the 20th Century. Hoover Field, located near the present site of the Pentagon, was the first major terminal to be developed in the Capital area, opening its doors in 1926. The following year, Washington Airport, another privately operated field, began service next door. In 1930, the economics of the Great Depression caused the two terminals to merge to form Washington-Hoover Airport. Bordered on the east by Highway One, with its accompanying high-tension electrical wires, and obstructed by a high smokestack on one approach and a dump nearby, the field was less than adequate. Incredibly, the airport's one runway was intersected by a busy vehicular street, Military Road, which had guards posted to flag down traffic during takeoffs and landings.

Bangkok's long delayed second international airport is frequently cited as a classic example of Thailand's poor track record of economic planning and management for large infrastructure projects. The second airport project has been bogged down for the past three decades particularly as a result of endless political inference. The project's completion has passed through two initial deadlines, the first in 1990 and the second in 2000. Previous governments have already invested considerable resources to expand the existing Don Muang Airport to cope with growing traffic volume. Don Muang has already reached its full capacity at 30 million passengers per annum. What is at stake is not just another high profile infrastructure project, but Thailand's chance of becoming the aviation hub for South East Asia. Conceived in the 1960s
The New Bangkok International Airport or Suvanabhumi Airport as it is now known, has been in planning since 1960 when the government of the day commissioned a master plan for the 1990 Bangkok Metropolis. The airport's site, Nong Ngu Hao - which translates as Cobra Swamp - is well situated about 30 kilometers east of Bangkok in Samut Prakan province. The government finalized the purchase of this boggy 3,100 hectare site in 1973. The project looked set to take off but came one day short of being approved in 1973 when a popular student uprising succeeded in overthrowing the government and the project has been shelved indefinitely.

1999 Honor Awards for Washington Architecture
Journal staff Five public projects and two private residences were recognized for design excellence in the AIA Seattle 1999 Honor Awards for Washington Architecture, sponsored by the American Institute of Architects, Seattle Chapter. The awards were announced at Benaroya Hall on Monday evening, Nov. 15, to an audience of nearly 1,000, the largest crowd ever gathered for the 48-year-old program. Seattle Mayor Paul Schell, an honorary member of the AIA, presided over the event and moderated the panel of jurors as they discussed the state of architecture in Washington. The international jury included Eva Jiricna, born in Czechoslovakia and presently the head of a globe-spanning London-based practice; Fumihiko Maki of Tokyo, among the world's most revered architects; and Rafael Vignoly, a native of Uruguay now practicing around the world from his New York headquarters. Included in this year's program was a response to a challenge issued by Schell at the 1997 Honor Awards program: "I'd like to see [a program] that will help architects, and all of us, rise to the challenge of designing our nation's Pacific gateway." Architect Peter Bohlin review-ed Pacific gateway entries in the 1999 owners program, and announced his selections Nov. 8 at On the Boards Theater. His selections included completed projects that responded specifically to the Pacific gateway theme as well as unbuilt and conceptual projects.

User's Guide Entries : Airports, Commuter Entries A Airports, Commuter Next Airports, Commuter Less than a decade before the Wright brothers' groundbreaking flight at Kitty Hawk and more than two decades before the advent of a commercial air transportation system in the United States in 1926, visionaries were writing about commuter air transportation ground facilities. Their ideas would evolve with the development of aircraft ranging on the one hand from the dirigible to the airplane and, on the other, from the Autogiro, the predecessor of the helicopter, to the Airphibian, a convertible automobile/airplane. Many of these commuter airports were planned to be in or near the central business district to accommodate the array of craft carrying passengers, mail, or freight in local hops to and from adjacent suburbs or to and from large outlying airports to coordinate with long-range flights. The Loop expressway system, would be big enough to facilitate convenient, rooftop airmail. As it turned out, airmail pilots did not use the roof as intended.
