General Information International Conference on Electronic Commerce '98 SEOUL - THE VENUE CITY Seoul is both the capital and the heart of the Republic of Korea, containing about 11 million of the nation's 45 million people. It was a seat of government in the Paekche Kingdom more than 1,500 years ago, but the city's true genesis occurred in 1394, when it became the capital during the Choson Dynasty (1392-1910). Standing at the crossroads of a glorious past and a promising future, it is noted for its major historical as well as cultural and natural attractions. Visitors to modern Seoul can still experience the essence of the ancient Orient which lingers in and around the old palaces, the imposing city gates and the serene temples in the midst of the skyscrapers and modern architecture of the thriving international city of today. The ceremonial and social components of the conference will provide participants with the opportunity to enjoy some of the city's fascinating attractions. KOREA - THE COUNTRY CLIMATE AND DRESS Korea lies in the Temperate Zone and has four distinct seasons. In late March or early April, the trees burst into leafy splendor to mark the beginning of spring. Cherry blossoms, forsythia, azaleas, magnolias and lilacs bloom in April. The weather will be generally sunny and the average temperature in Seoul in April is 18¡É (64¢µ). You may bring warm jacket or sweater, for the weather gets chilly in the evening.

Air Transport: International Airports
The Kingdom has three international airports. In 1981 (1401/02 AH), the late King Khalid opened the King Abdul Aziz International Airport in Jiddah. This airport, which has special facilities for handling the annual influx of pilgrims performing Hajj, has a land area of 105 square kilometers. The King Khalid International Airport was opened in 1983 (1403/04 AH). Located 35 kilometers north of Riyadh, with a land area of 225 square kilometers, the King Khalid International Airport is a masterpiece of modern architecture, blending traditional Arab design with the requirements of efficiency, and incorporating into the whole the essential Islamic character of the Kingdom. It is decorated with the works of many Saudi artists. It has four terminals and, from its inauguration, had the capacity to handle 7.5 million passengers a year. By 2000, its capacity had doubled. The third international airport, the King Fahd International Airport, is at Dhahran. The King Fahd International Airport has an area of 780 square kilometers, making it the largest airport in the Kingdom. There are two parallel runways, each 4,000 meters long. The airport has the capacity to handle 7 million passengers annually. Internet Saudinf Related Items General view of King Abdul Aziz Airport, Jiddah

Helsinki-Malmi Airport: a threatened pearl of 1930's functionalism
History Regular air traffic from Helsinki began in 1924 to Tallinn and Stockholm using floatplanes operating from Katajanokka seaplane airport in the heart of the capital. In Scandinavian countries with their long stretches of seashore and countless lakes, floatplanes could be commercially operated longer than in central Europe, where they were being replaced by land-based aircraft. In the beginning of the 1930's, land-based commercial air traffic with regular schedules had established itself in central Europe to such a degree that building airports on land became a prerequisite for joining the European air traffic route network both in Sweden and in Finland. This was considered necessary for both international cooperation and trade.

Kennedy International Airport (formerly Idlewild) date style Futurist construction reinforced concrete type Utility images notes Saarinen's terminal for TWA is sculpted as a symbol of flight - abstract, and not intentionally as a landing eagle as it has often been described.
The expressive curves of the design create attractive, spacious halls and a rare degree of exhilaration for an airport terminal. The period bright orange carpets are gone, and the atmosphere is a more contemporary cool with the tone set by the purple-tinted glazing, but the romance of flight is very much alive.
Although the building appears to be made of sculptural concrete, the structure is in fact braced within the concrete by an invisible web of reinforcing steel - comparable to the invisible steel hammock supporting the concrete roof of Saarinen's other 1962 airport terminal building, at Washington Dulles.

Posted: Tue May 25, 2004 1:00 pm Post subject: Building collapse at Paris-Charles-de-Gaulle airport This thread is for continuing discussion of the disasterous collapse of the year-old terminal building, design by Pail Andreau, at the Paris-Charles-de-Gaulle airport.
The unusual long-span structure of a busy, prominent public building experienced a catastrophic failure, killing about four people and injuring more.
Who is to blame? Were there problems in architectural design, engineering, construction materials, methods, foundations, inspections, contracts, politics, or Does the rest of the nearly one billion dollar building need to be razed for safety?
There's a basic need to talk about such a serious and shocking architectural disaster. Can it be discussed usefully, intelligently, professionally, sharing valuable and relevant experiences, knowledge, perspectives - without descending into groundless speculation? Have you seen the building, beofre or after collapse? Or really good coverage of the disaster? Anyone have before or after pics they can post? Please share your thoughts here, and the best links you find with solid information!

In slightly less than ten years of deregulation, Halifax International Airport (HIA) has dramatically evolved into the 7th busiest airport in the country, a national leader in the business of connecting passengers and cargo. Indeed, no other airport in the country has seen such a dramatic shift from spoke to hub. The airline system is the primary link in the global Travel and Tourism distribution chain. Just as airlines have a major stake in whether destinations meet traveller expectations, every hotel operator, travel agent, car rental company and attraction has a stake in the operations of the airlines and the houses they live in. Skavsta Airport – detailed general plan
Fully developed, Skavsta Airport could serve eight to ten million passengers per year. The trip between Stockholm and Skavsta takes 40 minutes by an express train that stops just outside the Skavsta passenger terminal.
But this is some 20 years into the future. At that time, when the area is completed, it Skavsta be the municipality’s largest concentration of employment opportunities with room for 5,000 new jobs. The development of Skavsta Airport is a top priority for the municipality of Nyköping. A detailed general plan has been commissioned to establish the airport’s development potential in the short and long term. The general plan describes the future alignment of the planned traffic route Östra Länken, how the roads are to be built, how the land is to be used and which environmental considerations must be taken into account. Skavsta’s goal is to serve as Stockholm’s second airport, and one critical condition for realising this vision is that Östra Länken is brought about. The detailed general plan is open for input until 10 June 2003. Prior to this, the general public and government authorities have the opportunity to study the documents and provide feedback on the plan proposal.
