In association with buy book back to bookshop THE MODERN TERMINAL: NEW APPROACHES TO AIRPORT ARCHITECTURE
By Brian Edwards. London: Routledge. 1998
The large scale of these airports is a common feature often hard to comprehend from drawings and photographs. This increase in scale is directly related to larger aircraft and ever increasing passenger throughputs. There is a need for architects and operators alike to have concise information about current and future airport projects. The Modern Terminal seeks to evaluate and illustrate many of these. There are some omissions, notably Denver, infamous for its ill-fated and possibly ill-conceived baggage handling system but in general the key airports are well documented. Airport buildings like their railway forebears symbolize gateways to their regions. They celebrate travel and motion. They are places of arrival (and departure). They are people places above all, sometimes shopping centres with aircraft attached and other times highly functional transport interchanges. The differences in their architecture are examined and the comparisons are informative Edwards alludes to contemporary terminal buildings which are environmentally conscious, now much less specific, more flexible in their conception allowing for inevitable change to occur through the life of the building without compromising the overriding architectural statements of the whole. There may well be evolving the next new generation of airport terminals.

Save a personal copy of this article and quickly find it again with Furl.net. It's free! Save it. A large-scale, site-specific work by Dennis Oppenheim, Blue Shirt, commissioned for Milwaukee's General Mitchell International Airport, finds itself at the center of a heated public-art controversy. Milwaukee County executive Scott Walker recently terminated the artist's contract for the $220,000, 34-foot-high sculpture, ostensibly over a scheduling dispute. The work, which is to be mounted on a multilevel, glass-walled parking garage, was not ready on the initial Jan. 31 target date for installation, and Oppenheim asked for an extension until April, not an uncommon request for major public commissions. But Walker, citing breach of contract, demanded that the artist return the $165,000 that he has received to date. The artist, however, says that he has already used most of the money to pay contractors who are currently fabricating the piece.

Posted on: 08/01/2005 Tucson International Airport By Michelle Stinnard Indian sandstone adds Southwestern style to airport The first phase of the Tucson International Airport’s expansion and renovation was recently completed, adding an 80,000-square-foot terminal to the facility, which features an enlarged baggage claim area, more space around ticket counters and various technological improvements. The architectural plan for the new terminal and rental car complex was conceived to complement the surrounding desert’s natural beauty and to enhance the Southwestern style. Indian sandstone from Southland Stone USA, Inc. of North Hollywood, CA, was selected for various elements of the project, as was sandstone from Arizona. According to Project Architect Vernon Pounds from HNTB Architecture, Inc. of Los Angeles, CA, the design goal of the project was to expand the terminal to meet the needs of the airport through the year 2020. “It was accomplished by relocating the rental car function to a new facility adjacent to the terminal and expanding the terminal on the land side,” said Pounds.

use of secondary terms
i really find the use of terms like 'aerodrome', 'airfield', etc to be mostly pointless in the context of an encyclopedia for the average user. saying that an airport is an aerodrome for aircraft to take off and land is not only obscure, it's redundant. the user must then look up aerodrome, which links to a single-line definition. - eric 06:30, 8 May 2005 (UTC)

        • Legally, there is a difference between an "airport" and an "aerodrome". it's not just obscurity, really! These are Canadian def'n, but seem to be standard: an "aerodrome" is any land or water surface that an aircraft is operating from. An "airport" is regulated for passenger safety. Will have a look at the first paragraph to incorporate some of this.

Malmi Airport today
Original details from the 1930's still adorn the architecturally acclaimed buildings of Helsinki-Malmi Airport. In the big hangar, smoking is prohibited in six languages: Finnish, Swedish, German, English, French and Polish. Today, Helsinki-Malmi Airport is a vigorous hub of general aviation in the capital region - and the only one. Although traffic declined in the early 1990's due to the economic depression and especially the introduction of VAT into training and maintenance services, the traffic has been increasing since the late 1990's. Even in the coldest season, about 2000-4000 flight operations are logged per month, and measured by landings Malmi Airport is the second-busiest airport in the country. Helsinki-Malmi is the largest and most productive center of pilot education in Finland. One reason for this is the population distribution: about 20% of the whole Finnish population is concentrated around the capital region. The Airport is located conveniently within city limits and is thus easily accessible by local bus or train, making it possible for anyone interested in aviation to earn their wings there or just take the family out to the Airport's view balcony, restaurant or terrace café to spend a nice day out aircraft-spotting in a green, tranquil milieu full of aviation history, beautiful 1930's airport architecture and a unique atmosphere of living aviation tradition - a combination most rare in present-day Europe, where surviving pre-war international airports preserved in their original shape and size can be counted with fingers of one hand only.

Bush airport prepares for noise study
Determination could decide if FAA buys out local homeowners
By SUZANNE WEST, Chronicle Correspondent
Residents living near George Bush Intercontinental Airport could learn within four to five months if the noise levels generated by airport operations near their homes meet or exceed the standards set by the Federal Aviation Administration for triggering noise mitigation efforts.
Airport manager Tom Bartlett and Rick Barrett, senior project manager for noise compliance, discussed the status of a planned noise model study and noise monitoring with members of the Coalition of Homeowner Alliances Requiring Government Equity (or CHARGE) at a town hall meeting Monday at North Harris College.
A contract that would fund the study is expected to go to Houston City Council for approval in the new few weeks.
"We had to make sure we had it right," Barrett said. "We need to make sure it serves the public the way it should."

Well, I have neglected this place for a while but have been prodded by a recent flood of comments to two entries about Philadelphia: Not surprising given the recent news that Comcast will be proceeding with building its national HQ in Center City Philadelphia with, what will be, the tallest tower in the city and the news that SEPTA has been given some stop-gap funding to prevent huge fare increases and substantial reductions in service. Alright, I have been shamed by the readers who are more willing to post here than I have been. I will re-energize this place. Thanks. By Eric, 10:59 AM in Architecture Cities Philadelphia Urbanism

Seattle
Just came back from a long weekend in Seattle with Laura. We visited the following neighborhoods: The aesthetic appeal of the city involves the transitions between a dense, skyscraper-heavy hub and the lush, watery neighborhoods around it. High-rises and high-density housing blocks concentrate, for the most part, around the Downtown, Belltown and Capitol Hill neighborhoods. Significant portions of the other neighborhoods have higher concentrations of

That brought new participants to the semi-annual regional meeting, including representatives from AOPAs in Israel, Lebanon, Cyprus, Turkey, and Greece. "We asked the delegates to list the top problems facing general aviation in their countries, and the problems are universal," said Phil Boyer, IAOPA president and president of AOPA-USA. "Just as in the United States, the problems are access to airports and airspace, medical certification, and the high cost of flying."

THE DOT STATUS REPORT 2. Making Air Traffic Control Safer and More Efficient 2.1The FAA should develop a revised NAS modernization plan within six months that will set a goal of the modernized system being fully operational nationwide by the year 2005; and the Congress, the Administration, and users should develop innovative means of financing this acceleration.
  • A plan for accelerated modernization has been developed. It is embodied in the draft of Version 3.0 of the National Airspace System architecture recently circulated within the FAA. Implementation of the modernization plan is dependent on receiving adequate funding during the next 8 years. Further discussions on architectural modernization are underway between the FAA and representatives of the aviation industry. Planning is also underway for the FAA's Flight 2000, a program to demonstrate and validate a substantial set of capabilities and associated benefits leading to the NAS modernization and continued implementation of free flight. A two-week planning session was completed and coordination with industry is in progress. Current efforts include establishing the metrics and certification issues plus training and integration requirements. A draft policy letter has been developed in partnership with industry to promote low cost weather data link systems for general aviation aircraft.
