engine survivor ivory coast ... crash victims The Worst Single-Plane Disaster Few crashes have been as horrific or as full of dangers in the plane and on the ground as the one that happened to Japan Airlines Flight 123 on August 12, 1985. The 747, out of Tokyo and bound for Osaka, had been modified to hold more passengers and was full. Shortly after takeoff, it experienced a serious malfunction in the rear tail section, rendering all controls useless. The problem was eventually traced to an improper repair Boeing had made years earlier. The flight lumbered along with the pilots wrestling for control and warning passengers to stay seated. Suddenly it slammed high into the side of Mount Osutaka. A flyover revealed at least ten fires burning among the sprawling wreckage, likely taking the lives of many who might have been spared. Further, the plane wreckage seemed to have slipped down the mountain, worsening the situation for any possible survivors.

weather planes thunderstorms ... navigational technology Causes of Airplane Crashes When a plane goes down, the initial concern is to find survivors and save lives. But immediately thereafter the focus changes to assessing the cause. It is vital for investigators to find the reasons behind crashes so that similar disasters can be prevented. But the causes of airplane crashes today are rarely traced to just one problem, and they are not easy to determine amidst the chaos and wreckage of a downed airplane. Complex factors generally combine to bring down a plane. Bad weather, like thunderstorms or fog, can compound pilot error, while small mechanical problems can affect other aspects of a plane’s ability to function. In many cases, planes have flaws that may not be discovered until after disaster strikes. Still, investigators have done remarkable work in making sense of perplexing crashes, and as a result many safety features are regularly added to planes.

Environment and Nature Environment and Nature Disasters and incidents printable version ... About RIVM Disasters and incidents General Overview Environmental disasters and incidents such as (serious) accidents to do with chemical and nuclear installations can break up society. It is therefore the task of the government to exert control when it comes to risks of accidents due to hazardous substances. This task is carried out by the Dutch government through the establishment of an accident prevention policy supervision and enforcement , and control and evaluation of disasters.
  • Accident prevention policy is aimed at the avoidance of disaster wherever possible and limiting the consequences arising from a disaster, should it occur. Supervision and enforcement entail checking to see if the proper permits have been obtained and inspecting sites to see if general safety precautions have been taken. Disaster control means making every possible effort to bring a particular disaster under control and taking proper measures to minimalise the consequences of the disaster. The purpose of the evaluation is to find out what caused the disaster, and to determine if the government authorities were adequate in handling the disaster.

The calls for help from friends and relatives of the dead can hit a peak five months after a major airplane disaster, according to Heidi Snow, the founder and executive director of AirCraft Casualty Emotional Support Services. ACCESS volunteers comfort people whose lives have been interrupted or forever changed by air disasters, stepping in to provide long-term support after the Red Cross departs and the media move on. Snow, a New Yorker who also spends time at a house outside Santa Fe, is the sole staff member helping to connect hundreds of volunteer "grief mentors" with people who call looking for help. She helps connect people to those with similar experiences, matching widows to widows, orphans to orphans. She brings together people who know what it's like to have a funeral without a body.
Beyond direct counseling, ACCESS is helping families of the victims set up their own support groups by acting as a clearinghouse for information and contacts. Snow knows first-hand what the families and friends of victims will face over the long haul.

Robert Preston Robert Preston is a painter and silkscreen artist living in New Hampshire. Originally noticed for his masterful work silkscreening (often in 22 colors!) the art of painters like Joe Coleman and Paul Laffoley, Robert is now gaining recognition for his own painting skills. For his show at Roq la Rue Preston will be showing a series of paintings based around "disasters": shipwrecks, car accidents, arrests, and huge fires. Preston's inspiration comes from the work of his father, a Boston newspaper photographer whose work dates from the 1940's until his death in 1977.

Charles Krafft Charles Krafft has toiled for years in obscurity as a painter and writer in the Northwest, earning himself the dubious distinction of being "the oldest promising young artist in Seattle." Five years ago he joined a guild of lady china painters and acquired the skills to launch a line of hand painted disasters in delft. His career has since taken off like the space shuttle Challenger. "Collector plates are something we've all seen in souvenir shops, or advertised in the back pages of supermarket tabloids and Sunday papers," Krafft explains. "After wading through the usual swill of bad news and lurid gossip, you can usually find one of those limited editions of a maudlin portrait or a rhapsodic pastoral scene to send away for. But you never find the pictures of the gritty life most of us are living in the late 20th century on ornamental china because no one would want to hang it on their walls, much less eat off it."

Eyewitnesses to Disasters
The old saying, "seeing is believing," is true most of the time for most people, but it isn't always true. A skeptic may invent alternative explanations for what he is seeing. I call this phenomenon "seeing isn't believing." In every Middle Eastern Islamic nation, the vast majority of those people interviewed so far think that the videotape of Osama bin Laden's bragging was faked by the United States. It is as if they all saw the movie, Wag the Dog Then there is another phenomenon, less familiar, "believing is seeing." It may be even more common that "seeing isn't believing." Psychology professors occasionally stage classroom events and then ask their students to summarize what they saw. The accounts vary widely. When it comes to the events preceding and following the attack of 9-11, I would like to get to the bottom of them. I want to know what "really" happened. You do, too. Yet I know that this is highly unlikely to happen in my generation. As a trained historian, I can assure you that sorting out any sequence of events that led up to a major historical event is no picnic. Initial reports are confused, and not all of them get published. Some reports are wrong. Others seem to be wrong, but later are shown to be accurate. By then, official stories have been set in concrete, so no one pays much attention. There is a lot of confusion from day one, and this confusion doesn't go away. It just gets worse. Follow-up reports and new explanations are added. Various versions are presented as making sense out of the confusion. Then official versions get floated, and revised, and re-floated.

INTRODUCTION
Most aircraft disasters are the result of inappropriate action or actions carried out by the pilots involved - a process euphemistically known as "pilot error". Whilst the term "pilot error" is often seized upon by airline management, aircraft manufacturers and government aviation safety authorities to shift the blame for the disaster entirely onto the relevant aircrew (who are usually dead), it is often a gross over simplification of a far more complex situation. Aircraft disasters are invariably the result of a chain of events culminating in the disaster itself. Many of the factors involved are insignificant in their own right, but when combined with other nominally insignificant factors they can result in a chain of events in which the pilots involved become mentally overloaded and confused as to what is happening and they begin to carry out actions inappropriate for the situation at hand. Poor aircraft system and cockpit design is often a significant causal factor as to why aircrew become confused and begin to mishandle the situation they find themselves in.

Remote mapping in disaster zones
When natural disaster strikes, such as the recent fires in Southern California or severe floods in Europe in 2002, quick assessment of the land damage can be the difference between a life saved or lost. Researchers at Columbia University's Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory and California Institute of Technology's Jet Propulsion Laboratory recently published findings that they say prove that synthetic aperture radar (SAR) polarimetry can do a better job of assessing disaster damage than current optical remote sensing technologies, such as Landsat. SAR is an airborne or spaceborne radar tool for looking at Earth's surface and is especially beneficial when looking at land deformation. The SAR polarimetry instruments use a single antenna to detect changes in the surface materials. For example, bare surfaces produce a single "bounce" back to the antenna on the polarimetry instrument, whereas trees or other ground cover produce more random prints.
SAR imaging has a clear advantage over other remote-sensing technologies: SAR instruments can obtain accurate digital images through cloud or dust cover, through darkness, rain or smoke (

Famous Aircraft Disasters
Back to Amazing Airplanes There have been many famous aircraft disasters in the past century. Many has even broken world records. Advanced Jetliner Crashes In France Killing At Least Three A DEMONSTRATION FLIGHT PARIS, June 26-A new jetliner considered by many aviation experts to be the best commercial aircraft crashed on June 26, 1988 in France killing at least three and injuring over 50 people. There was no passenger list so they couldn’t find out who died and who survived. The aircraft that crashed was an Airbus A320. 9 Lost, 23 Injured As Jet's Cargo Door Opens and Skin Rips Over The Pacific UNITED AIRLINES 747 LOST FUSELAGE OVER PACIFIC HONOLULU, Feb 24-The jumbo jet took off for New Zealand and just minutes later a piece of the fuselage ripped off the jumbo jet. As the plane kept flying, 9 people got sucked out of the aircraft. 23 were injured in the horrible moment. Flight 811 went from a routine flight to a flight of terror. The people in the back did not know that nine of the business-class passengers had been sucked out of their seats. Jetliner Crashes With 524 Aboard In Central Japan 7 SURVIVORS WERE LOCATED TOKYO- Tuesday, Aug. 13- Japan Airlines jumbo jet carrying 524 passengers plunged into a mountain in central Japan. Seven survivors were located in the crash. The distance from Haneda airport to Mt. Ogura where the crash site was about 330 miles apart. The 747 crash in Japan puzzles aviation experts in the U.S. This is the worst single aircraft disaster in the world. It had the largest amount of deaths in aviation history.
