The TLR factor: Mysterious temporal and local patterns in aircraft crashes
Actual Position
Possibly a hint to a still unexplored atmospheric phenomenon?
by Grazyna Fosar and Franz Bludorf, Berlin
The increasing number of aircraft crashes during the last years, at which a large number of people lost their lives, concerns us all and lets us ask for the causes for this development. Not always technical defects or human failure may be determined clearly. Especially lately there were disasters ever more frequently, where research for the causes led to ambiguous results, despite of the improved technical possibilities. This forced us to look for possible connections between these incidents. May such a connection exist at all between different events? Actually an unusual question, but our research showed a still much more surprising result: Indeed there was a number of incidents during the last two years that follow a mysterious local and temporal pattern! There seems to be a time and location dependent risk factor for the air traffic, which we provisionally called TLR factor (Temporary local Risk Factor) for lack of better explanations . The crash of Swissair 111 On September 2nd the Swissair 111 was on its way on a line flight from New York to Geneva. About 22.14 local time the pilot announced to air traffic control in Moncton, Canada, that he detected smoke in the cab. They decided to try a forced landing in Halifax.

While most airplane disasters leave major wreckage to assist officials indetermining the cause of the crash, Flight 2501 left only the smallest of clues.

The Joint Archives Quarterly
The Disappearance of Flight 2501 by Michigan Shipwreck Research Associates June 23, 1950. It was the day before North Korea invaded South Korea, prompting President Harry S Truman to commit U.S. forces to defend the country. In New York, the evening of Friday, June 23, 1950, was a warm, but pleasant night. Passengers who boarded Northwest Airlines Flight 2501 bound for Seattle, Washington, with a scheduled stopover in Minneapolis, Minnesota, were looking forward to a long, but comfortable flight. The pilot was 35-year old Captain Robert C. Lind of Hopkins, Minnesota. In the right hand seat was co-pilot Verne F. Wolfe, also 35, of Minneapolis. Twenty-five-year old stewardess Bonnie Ann Feldman was in the passenger compartment taking care of 55 passengers, identified as 27 women, 22 men and six children. As the plane reached the lakeshore at 12:13 a.m. EST that evening, Captain Lind, knowing of storms over Lake Michigan, requested clearance from air traffic control to 2,500 feet. He was denied due to other traffic in the area. History of the DC-4 Late in 1939, the lone DC-4E prototype was sold to Japan. This was ostensibly for use by a Japanese airline, but the buyer turned out to be a front organization for the Japanese Navy and the craft quickly disappeared. The quick disappearance of the airplane was attributed to a training crash in Tokyo Bay but, actually, it was disassembled in an aircraft factory and used as the model for a very similar four-engine bomber that, thankfully, never got beyond the prototype stage.

TV Ownership Multiply the number of daily TV deaths by the number of people owning TV sets and subtract that number from the population. Most nations would disappear on a daily basis. Nuclear Desire Not all countries that crave the power and prestige of nuclear weapons have been able to master the technology and the supply of uranium necessary. In addition to the five official members of the nuclear club (incidentally the 5 permanent members of the UN Security Council), at least another eight nations actively pursued steps to qualify for membership. Recently some countries have been militarily persuaded to abandon their nuclear plans (Iraq). Others have voluntarily started to destroy their arsenal (South Africa). Most recently North Korea struck a billion-dollar deal with the US using its alleged arsenal as a bargaining chip for economic help. Fresh Water 97.4 % of the world's water is ocean water. 2 % is accounted for by ice caps and glaciers, and about 0.6 % is ground water, which constitutes the entire fresh water reserves on earth. Lake water represents only 7 millionths of the world's water; clouds only 1 millionth, and river water 10% of a millionth. Ocean Currents Ocean Floor Ocean World Landlocked Nations These countries have one territorial condition in common: no access to the world's oceans. This has a fundamental impact on economics, social behavior, and perspective on the world. Many of the republics of the former Soviet Union are landlocked. Their recent independence has radically increased the number of countries, that suffer this unique condition.

As political scientists Roger Cobb and David Primo note in their book The Plane Truth, fewer than 14,000 people perished in U.S. airline accidents between the start of public aviation and the year 2000. (Almost three times that number die in U.S. car crashes each year Lexi Krock
This Boeing 707 on service from Bogota, Colombia, crashed while approaching its destination at New York's JFK International Airport. Seventy-three of the 158 people aboard were killed. The accident occurred after the plane flew in a holding pattern for 77 minutes while awaiting landing clearance at JFK and ran out of fuel. The NTSB attributed the crash to the failure of the flight crew to manage the aircraft's fuel load and to communicate to ground controllers what had become an urgent fuel situation. The board also criticized the airline for failing to provide the crew with the latest wind shear information in New York, which could have helped the pilot anticipate landing delays there and plan for an alternative destination. The FAA subsequently mandated stricter flight planning and communication requirements for all foreign carriers operating in the U.S.
It took one of the longest air crash investigations in U.S. history to determine what happened (if not why) to cause this accident near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, which killed all 132 people aboard. En route from Chicago, the Boeing 737 went down in a wooded area 10 miles north of its destination at Greater Pittsburgh International Airport just seconds after the captain declared an emergency. In its final report released five years after the crash, the NTSB concluded that the aircraft's rudder, a moveable control surface hinged to the tail fin, became jammed for still unknown reasons, forcing the plane into an almost vertical roll at about 3,600 feet. NTSB recommendations prompted Boeing to completely redesign the 737's rudder control system and revise the aircraft's flight manual to include a procedural checklist for pilots faced with rudder-control problems.

The Bomb
On December 21, 1988, Pan Am Flight 103 left London heading for New York. Including the crew there were 259 people on board. Over the village of Lockerbie, Scotland the plane exploded and pieces fell into two rows of houses, killing 11 people on the ground. The final toll was 270 dead. One witness said "…the sky was actually raining fire."
The crash left a deep gouge in the earth and destroyed several houses in Lockerbie (CP photo)
By the following week investigators were certain: a bomb brought the plane down. Airplane disasters hold a special horror. Perhaps because we've been in the air for such a tiny part of our time on the planet. Perhaps because we know it's unnatural, that a plane isn't a vehicle, it's a life support system that moves. If your car sputters and dies on the road out of Regina you make sure you pull far enough off that no one hits you in the trunk. Sputter and die six miles over anywhere and it's a different story. 270 people were killed when the plane went down. Two of them were Canadians.
