Consider the statistics below: Probability of being killed in an airplane accident vs. other causes of death Your chances of being involved in an aircraft accident are about 1 in 11 million. On the other hand, your chances of being killed in an automobile accident are 1 in 5000. Statistically, you are at far greater risk driving to the airport than getting on an airplane. However, the perception is that you have more control over your fate when you are in your car than as a passenger. Consequently, fearful flyers develop a negative bias toward flying. That is, they will bias their perception to notice those events and experiences that support their fears. Those fears become validated by the continual bombardment of information related to airline safety following an accident. Who can forget the horrifying coverage of the airplanes flying into the World Trade Center on 9/11 replayed over and over until the major networks agreed it served no purpose to replay the events?

You offer them a single item. Then you take an identical item, divide it into bits, and ask them which of the two options they would like to have: one big lump or lots of little lumps. At a certain stage they're supposed to gaze witheringly at you and point out that they're both the same and aren't grown-ups stupid. During my previous career I mostly had to deal with the kind of people who unfailingly opted for lots of little lumps. Anyway, I don't do that sort of work any more. I decided I was sick of trying to communicate with people to whom one had so speak slowly in words of no more than two syllables strung together in sentences containing only a subject, an object and a verb, and with no dependent clauses. Butcher University of Minnesota Chris Hatcher University of California, San Francisco ABSTRACT Psychological services for air disaster victims have been neglected in past airport and airline crash response programs. This article explores the psychological impact of air disasters on passengers and airline employees, highlighting the victims' emotional needs following a crash. Organizational efforts that have been implemented to address human problems resulting from air crashes are surveyed. The paucity of specific governmental and corporate initiatives to provide psychological aid to human survivors of air crashes is cited. Issues related to the development of volunteer crisis intervention services for airports are discussed. Few people like to dwell on thoughts of impending doom or to make plans for dealing with catastrophic events like airline crashes.
