HIV/AIDS Basics HIV and AIDS are not the same thing... HIV transmission Who's at risk? Making choices ... How can GMHC help? HIV and AIDS are not the same thing... HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) is a virus that attacks and breaks down the body's immune system - the "internal defense force" that fights off infections and disease. When the immune system becomes weak, we lose our protection against illness and can develop serious, often life-threatening, infections and cancers. AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) is the name for the condition that people with HIV have if they develop one of the serious infections connected with HIV, or if blood tests show that their immune system has been very badly damaged by the virus. It usually takes many years before HIV breaks down a person's immune system and causes AIDS. Most people have few, if any, symptoms for several years after they are infected. But once HIV gets into the body, it can do serious damage to the immune system. People who appear perfectly healthy may have the virus, without knowing it, and pass it on to others.

168. HIV And AIDS In Russia, Eastern Europe And Central Asia
Russia and the former countries of the Soviet Union are facing serious hiv epidemic. Information, statistics.
http://www.avert.org/ecstatee.htm
search avert.org Until the mid-1990s, most of the countries of the former Soviet Union appeared to have been spared the worst of the HIV epidemic. Mass screening of blood samples from people whose behaviour put them at risk of infection showed extremely low levels of HIV, right up to 1994. At that time the whole of Eastern Europe put together had around 30,000 infections among its 450 million people, Western Europe had over 15 times as many cases, while in sub-Saharan Africa over 400 times as many people were living with the virus. The AIDS epidemic in Eastern Europe and Central Asia now shows no signs of declining. Some 210,000 people were infected with HIV in 2004, bringing the total number of people living with the virus to 1.4 million. AIDS claimed 60,000 lives in the past year. Worst affected are the Russian Federation, Ukraine, and the Baltic states (Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania), but HIV continues to spread in Belarus, Moldova and Kazakhstan, while more recent epidemics are now evident in Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan. It is estimated that around 860,000 people aged 15-49 were living with HIV in the Russian Federation at the end of 2003 (though estimates vary widely). Driving these epidemics is widespread risky behaviour - injecting drug use and unsafe sex - among young people. Extraordinarily large numbers of young people regularly or irregularly engage in injecting drug use. This is reflected in increasing HIV prevalence among injecting drug users throughout the former Soviet Union.

    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
The Red Ribbon is the global symbol for solidarity with HIV positive and people living with AIDS. The Red Ribbon was created by singer/songwriter Paul Jabara AIDS is an acronym for Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome or Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome and is defined as a collection of symptoms and infections resulting from the depletion of the immune system caused by infection with HIV . Although treatments for both AIDS and HIV exist, there is no known cure. The rate of clinical disease progression varies widely between individuals and has been shown to be affected by many factors such as host susceptibility, immune function, health care, the presence of co-infections and peculiarities of the viral strain. HIV is transmitted through penetrative ( anal or vaginal ) and oral sex blood transfusion ; the sharing of contaminated needles in health care settings and through drug injection; and, between mother and infant, during pregnancy childbirth and breastfeeding AIDS is thought to have originated in sub-Saharan Africa during the twentieth century and is now a global epidemic. During the summer of 2001,  we took part in the Governor's Summer Internship Program. As part of the program, the interns were required to complete a policy paper on a topic of their choice. We completed a policy paper entitled, "Reducing the Risk: Implementing Standardized Mandatory HIV/AIDS Curriculum in Maryland's Public Schools."
The policy paper has been put on the web so that others may gain access to information about this very important topic. We hope that someday our work will make a difference and perhaps reform current HIV/AIDS curricula requirements in Maryland.
