Vatican advice on condoms is at odds with the WHO The church is making the claims across four continents despite a widespread scientific consensus that condoms are impermeable to the HIV virus. A senior Vatican spokesman backs the claims about permeable condoms, despite assurances by the World Health Organisation that they are untrue. The church's claims are revealed in a BBC1 Panorama programme, Sex and the Holy City, to be broadcast on Sunday. The president of the Vatican's Pontifical Council for the Family, Cardinal Alfonso Lopez Trujillo, told the programme: "The Aids virus is roughly 450 times smaller than the spermatozoon. The spermatozoon can easily pass through the 'net' that is formed by the condom. They are wrong "These margins of uncertainty... should represent an obligation on the part of the health ministries and all these campaigns to act in the same way as they do with regard to cigarettes, which they state to be a danger."

Life and disability insurance will be much more difficult. In some states, you can purchase small amounts on a "guaranteed issue" basis from special risk brokers. Most people, however, will only be able to get life and disability coverage by going to work full time as part of a large employee group. 2. I do not know if I am HIV-positive, but I have had several sexually-transmitted diseases and I have used drugs. Will this affect my application for insurance? If you are applying for health insurance in an "open enrollment" environment, you will have the same opportunities as anyone else (see answer to question 1). In states that do not offer that opportunity, or if you are applying for life and disability insurance, a history of sexually transmitted diseases might lead the insurer to decline your application or at least to request a blood test, including an HIV antibody test, and a physician's statement. A history of drug use may cause the insurer to decline your application or to charge you a higher premium. Rules will vary from company to company.

Archives BURUNDI: IRIN interview with HIV/AIDS Minister Sindabizera NAIROBI (IRIN) - The Burundi government says although the HIV infection prevalence in urban areas has stabilised at 18.6 percent, it is concerned by a significant increase in the level of infection in rural areas. At 1 percent in 1989, HIV prevalence in rural areas was 7.5 percent by 2001, the Burundi minister for HIV/AIDS issues, Genevieve Sindabizera, told IRIN on Wednesday. She attributed the stabilisation in urban areas to a higher literacy rate, better means of communication, and increased acceptance and availability of condoms. In order to avoid further deterioration of the situation in rural areas, she said a national action plan targets vulnerable groups by way of an information campaign carried out through peer educators, the promotion of condom use, counselling of people living with HIV/AIDS, the reduction of the epidemic's socioeconomic impact on people by the promotion of revenue-generating activities, and the social integration and education of orphans. With an average annual per capita income of US $140, the economic impact of the HIV/AIDS pandemic has been dramatic in a country wracked by years of civil strife. Burundi's HIV/AIDS secretariat has estimated that if transmission of the virus continues at the current rate, life expectancy will drop below 40 years in 2010, compared to 60 years if there were no AIDS.
