While it is almost certain that you have heard quite a bit about AIDS in the past 15 years, the term HIV might be new to you. HIV and AIDS are very closely related, and if you understand HIV infection, you can better understand AIDS.
What is AIDS and how is it caused?
AIDS stands for "acquired immune deficiency syndrome," a disease in which the body's immune system breaks down. Normally, the immune system fights off infections in the body and certain other diseases. When this system fails, such as in a person with AIDS, the person can develop a number of life-threatening illnesses. People do not die of AIDS, but of the complications resulting from an opportunistic infection because of a compromised immune system. AIDS is caused by a virus called the "human immunodeficiency virus," more commonly referred to as HIV. The HIV virus may live in the body for years before it is even noticed until symptoms begin appearing. It is important to note that although there are no visible symptoms, the virus can still be transmitted. Actually a person can go without having symptoms for up to 10-15 years. One of the biggest misconceptions about AIDS is that only certain "high-risk" groups are infected with the virus. Who you are has nothing to do with whether you are in danger of being infected with the aids virus. What matters are the behaviors in which you engage. People are worried about getting AIDS. Some have a reason to be worried and need to make some lifestyle changes and take precautions to protect themselves. On the other hand, many people are in no danger of contracting AIDS based on the life they lead.

Douglas County (Oregon) AIDS Council: HIV Resource Center
What Is HIV Disease?
Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) is not a single disease. It is a spectrum of conditions that occur when a person's immune system is seriously damaged after years of attack by the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). HIV, therefore, is the virus that causes AIDS. HIV is spread by sexual contact with an infected person, by needle-sharing among injection drug users (IDUs), or, less commonly (and now very rarely in countries where blood is screened for HIV antibodies), through transfusions of injected blood or blood-clotting factors. Babies born to HIV-infected women may become infected before or during birth, or through breastfeeding after birth. Some people fear that HIV might be transmitted in other ways; however, no scientific evidence to support any of these fears has been found. IF HIV were being transmitted through other routes (for example, through air or insects) the pattern of reported AIDS cases would be much different form what has been observed, and cases would be occurring much more frequently in persons who report no identified risk for infection. The HIV Resource Center is a project of Douglas County AIDS Council (DCAC) DCAC was founded in September, 1987 by the Roseburg AIDS Task Force. The Task Force operated for one year to assess the needs of Douglas County. It adjourned with the formation of the

What Is It?
AIDS is one of the most serious, deadly diseases in human history. More than 20 years ago, doctors in the United States identified the first cases of AIDS in San Francisco and New York. Now there are an estimated 42 million people living with HIV or AIDS worldwide, and more than 3 million die every year from AIDS-related illnesses. AIDS is caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). HIV destroys a type of defense cell in the body called a CD4 helper lymphocyte (pronounced: lim -fuh-site). These lymphocytes are part of the body's immune system, the defense system that fights infectious diseases. But as HIV destroys these lymphocytes, people with the virus begin to get serious infections that they normally wouldn't - that is, they become immune deficient. The name for this condition is acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Half of all new HIV infections in the United States occur in people under 25 years of age, and thousands of U.S. teens become infected with HIV each year. As the medical community learns more about how the HIV virus works, they've been able to develop drugs to inhibit it (meaning they interfere with its growth). These drugs have been successful in slowing the progress of the disease, and people with the disease now live much longer. But there is still no cure for HIV and AIDS.

Making Life Better for Kids Impacted by HIV/AIDS
From 1993 to present day, Camp Heartland has provided fun, exciting and progressive camp experiences to kids living with or affected by HIV/AIDS. Filled with diverse activities and an amazing community of people, camping offers the opportunity for personal growth, social development and good old-fashioned fun. Experiences like Camp Heartland's summer camp program can make a profound and very positive difference to children impacted by HIV/AIDS.
At summer camp sessions campers build permanent friendships, self-confidence, cherished memories, self-sufficiency, social skills and a sense of hope and liberation. During the year, these experiences often translate into improved quality of life: better grades, increased compliance with difficult medical treatments, more effective anger management, improved self-image, new friends and a stronger will to “pull-through” in tough times.
The Camp Heartland staff has been grateful to be part of the lives of thousands of wonderful young people facing life with HIV/AIDS over the past decade. Every day, we miss the nearly 60 children we have lost, but we have also seen many more grow and thrive. More than 75 former campers, now young adults, have returned to Camp Heartland in leadership roles to help create the magic of camp that was such an essential part of their childhood.
The combination of a superb and unique camping program and many amazing campers has created one of the most respected camping programs for children with special needs. Please read more in depth information on the Camp Heartland

AIDS activist Mary Fisher ends anti-HIV treatments
Mary Fisher has stopped taking anti-HIV drugs because of their negative side effects
February 1, 1999
Web posted at: 10:59 p.m. EST (0359 GMT) CHICAGO (CNN) Seven years after Mary Fisher took the podium at the Republican National Convention to talk about her battle with the AIDS virus, the single mother of two has decided to take herself off anti-HIV drugs. She is not alone. Although powerful drug cocktails have been potent in staving off the development of AIDS, debilitating side effects often make life unbearable for HIV patients. Many liken HIV treatments to chemotherapy treatments that cancer patients endure. Among other symptoms, the powerful anti-HIV cocktails can cause headaches, fatigue, nausea, abdominal distress and diarrhea. RELATED VIDEO CNN's Elizabeth Cohen reports on Mary Fisher's decision to cease her drug therapy Windows Media "When it gets to the point that my children and I aren't living our lives. I had to make a decision that I would rather be a mom than be in bed or be sick," said Fisher.

Lab study finds key protein in AIDS virus infection
WASHINGTON (AP) The AIDS virus uses a protein complex that does housekeeping chores inside cells to spread disease to other cells of the body, researchers say. Studies published Tuesday in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences report that a group of proteins called proteasomes are used by HIV, the AIDS virus, to assemble new viral particles and to spread those new particles to uninfected cells.
